Apple's 2017 iPhone will have Lightning Connectors with USB-C fast charging

Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple will replace the lighting connector on the iPhone 8 with a USB Type-C port, like the company's 2016 MacBook Pro lineup. However KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo refutes the claims in his latest research note and clarifies that Apple will stick with Lightning Connector on the next generation iPhone, but will utilize USB-C Power Delivery technology in the power chord for super-fast charging capabilities.

This means Apple will tweak the internal components to integrate USB Type-C Power Delivery, but retain the Physical Lightning Connector. The tech will be adapted to the company's Lightning design and will be sourced from Texas Instrument and Cypress. Not only the premium iPhone 8, but the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus will also support USB-C Power Deliver techology.  

"We believe all three new iPhones launching in 2H17 will support fast charging by the adoption of Type-C Power Delivery technology (while still retaining the Lightning port)," says Kuo in his research note.

Previous reports have revealed that Apple will launch three iPhones this year. The two usual standard and Plus iPhone, and a premium iPhone 8 to mark iPhone's 10th anniversary. The iPhone 8 is also expected to feature metal and glass design, bezel-less OLED display with no home button, iris scanner and wireless charging.
