Micromax reportedly working on its own OS based on Android


According to a report by Economic Times, Micromax is developing its own Android based operating system. The new OS will be a forked version of Android and will come with a suite of apps and services which will run across Micromax's smartphone, tablets, TVs and wearables.

The OS will aim to bring a differentiated experience to users across all platforms including wearables. The apps and services developed for this OS will also be released for the Yu series of devices.

The company's software team in Bengaluru is believed to be developing the forked Android OS and has acquired a team of 75 designers from Nokia R&D in Beijing and a second team from Shenzen.

Micromax co-founder Vikas Jain said to ET, “We’re excellent with partnerships and we don’t want to reinvent the wheel.”. The company isn't breaking away from Android, but looking forward to develop a customized OS and apps targeted at Indian audience., He further added. Micromax's new OS is headed by former Amazon executive Ashsish Agarwal, who currently heads technology at the company.

The first smartphone with the new OS will be available by the end of this financial years. More details about the OS will be outed in the coming months.
