The HTC U11 Life was launched in two variants: Sense version with Android 7.1.1 Nougat for the U.S and Android One version running Android Oreo out of the box from day one for the rest of the world. However, HTC promised Oreo update for U.S version within 30 days. Now keeping the promise HTC has announced that Oreo update will roll out starting today to the unlocked HTC U11 Life in the U.S. This will put the U.S U11 Life version on par with the Android One version. The latest update news comes soon after HTC released Android Oreo for the U11 flagship on Monday, November 27. The announcement was made by Mo Versi, HTC's VP of Product Management on Twitter: "HTC u11 life unlocked customers! You're next with Oreo! It's available to download starting today! Thank you!" The update will bring native Android Oreo features like Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode, notification channels, adaptive icons, notification dots, smart text selection, Autofill API and more. Earlier this month, HTC started rolling out Android Oreo for the flagship U11 in its home market Taiwan. Now the Taiwanese device maker has announced that the it will begin global roll out of Oreo starting with the U.S on November 27. In the U.S the unlocked variants will first get the update later today, followed by carrier-locked units, but the time-frame was not revealed. HTC's VP of Product Management Mo Versi took to Twitter to make the announcement“Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. The Oreo OS update will be available for download on the HTC u11 unlocked version starting on Monday! HTC has finally introduced Vive Focus, its first standalone VR headset for the China market. Being a standalone device, there is no need to attach the headset to a PC, or slide a smartphone inside it, because all the sensors, processing power and display are built into the headset for an untethered VR experience. The Vive Focus VR headset provides 'world-scale' tracking through inside-out 6-degree-of-freedon tracking (6DoF). There's also built-in water-repellent padding, instant-on support, and the device comes with a single three-degrees-of-freedom motion controller. The headset sports high-resolution AMOLED screen to deliver immersive VR experience, with low latency and unmatched clarity. Most of the flagships phones in 2017 has dual-cameras and bezel-less design. That said, with the latest U11+, HTC went bezel-free, but sticked with single camera. However, with dual-camera now becoming a standard feature in entry-level, mid-range and premium smartphones, it looks like HTC wants a piece of the action. If you were following the Pixel 2 phone's news from the beginning, you will know that initial reports suggested that Google was preparing three Pixel phone this year code-named Walleye, Muskie and Taimen. While Walleye was said to be the successor of the smaller Pixel phone, the Muskie and Taimen were the successor of Pixel 2. However, later the Muskie model was dropped and Google went ahead with Walleye and Taimen, which is now known as Pixel 2 (manufactured by HTC) and Pixel 2 XL (built by LG) respectively. So what happened to Muskie? The Verge reports that HTC's newly launched U11+ was originally intended to be the Muskie, the shelved HTC made Pixel 2 XL, which was replaced by LG made Pixel 2 XL. Citing sources familiar with "HTC and Google's tumultuous recent history", the publication report suggests that the core design and engineering for HTC U11+ was essentially done to build the Google Pixel 2XL. However, for some reasons, unknown, Google axed the phone, which went on to become HTC's first bezel-less phone, U11+. It's worth mentioning that the similarities between HTC U11+ and Pixel 2 XL are not hard to spot. It has a fingerprint scanner that's embedded into the home button, and includes HTC U11 like Edge Sense function, which lets you squeeze the edge of phone to trigger various actions. You can customize Edge sense to launch the camera, summon Google Assistant/Alexa, open any app and much more. As for the specs, the HTC U11 Life features 5.2-inch Full HD display with Gorilla Glass protection, and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor. It will be available in two variants: 3GB RAM and 32GB storage for the North American market, and 4GB RAM, and 64GB storage for the rest of the world. The storage is expandable via microSD card. For photography, it gets 16MP f/2.0 camera with PDAF for fast focus speeds with reduced blur, and HDR Boost for more dynamic exposure range. HDR Boost delivers clearer, more balanced pictures by taking multiple shots that measure the darkest shadows and brightest highlights without slowdown. Sony's first flagship offering of this year, Xperia XZ Premium, was the first smartphone with Snapdragon 835 chip, 4K HDR display and Motion Eye camera for Super slow motion video recording. It was introduced back in February at MWC 2017 in Luminous Chrome and Deepsea Black colors, followed by a Bronze Pink color variant in April. And now the company has announced that the Xperia XZ Premium will be available in opulent red, chicly named ‘Rosso’. Google and HTC has announced a $1.1 billion deal that lets Google acquire a team of HTC talent – many of whom have already worked on Pixel smartphone line. The deal also includes non-exclusive license for HTC intellectual property, to support the Pixel smartphone family. Google’s SVP, Rick Osterloh in a blog post said the deal would help Google to bolster the search engine giants smartphone and hardware business. Last year the company introduced Made by Google products designed in-house including Pixel phones, Google Home, Google WiFi, Chromecast Ultra and Daydream View. The company will unveil its 2017 line of products on October 4. As for HTC, it said, it is not getting out of smartphone business altogether and is still game. In fact the Taiwanese smartphone maker is currently working on its next flagship. It also said it would continue to build the virtual reality ecosystem to grow its VIVE business, while investing in other next-generation technologies, including the Internet of Things, augmented reality and artificial intelligence. This is the second time Google is involved in a big smartphone business purchase. The Pixel maker back in 2012 acquired Motorola for $12.5 billion, before selling it to Lenovo for a fraction of what was originally paid. But, Google and HTC's relationship goes all the way back to 2008. Together HTC and Google, formed a strategic alliance and launched the first ever Android smartphone, HTC Dream aka T-Mobile G1, followed by Nexus One in 2010, Nexus 9 tablet in 2014, and the first Pixel smartphone in 2016.
