Xiaomi Mi Max 2 picks up new update

Xiaomi has pushed a new update to the Mi Max 2 that brings security improvements and optimizations.

The update arrives as MIUI V9.0.3.0.NDDMIEI, and as per the changelog includes November 2017 Android security patch, which should fix the KRACK WPA2 WiFi vulnerability.

In addition the update brings optimizations to MIUI's notification shade, allowing it to better accommodate messaging app Line and WhatsApp. Lastly, the GMS module has also been updated.

The update package weighs in at 297MB and is rolling out over-the-air. You'll be automatically notified when the update is available. You can also check for the update manually by opening the 'Updater' app on your device. Do note that if your Mi Max 2 is running an older version of MIUI, you will have manually flash the update.

To recap the specs, the Mi Max 2 features 6.44-inch Full HD display with Gorilla Glass 3 protection, octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor, 4GB RAM, 32GB/64GB internal storage, 12MP Sony IMX386 PDAF assisted rear camera, 5MP 85-degree wide-angle selfie camera, fingerprint scanner, 4G VoLTE, USB Type-C port and 5300mAh battery. It ships with Android Nougat based MIUI 9.

The 64GB Mi Max 2 is price at Rs. 15,999, while the 32GB Mi Max 2 costs Rs. 13,999. It is available from all leading online stores, Mi.com and Mi Home store.

Xiaomi launches new tool to track repair status of device in real time

Xiaomi India has come out with a new solution to simplify its after sales service. Until now Xiaomi device owners required to call the specific service centre and inquire about the repair status of their device. 

However, now Xiaomi is making it easier to check the device repair status with a new online service. This new service called "Service Order Status" will allow users to track their device repair status in real time online without any hassles. 

The new service is available in Xiaomi's India website, and users have to enter details like phone number, service number and IMEI number. After entering these details, you'll get an OTP (one time password) on your smartphone, which you will need to verify on the Mi.com website. You will then get status of your service order along with details of your phone.

The service status might be displayed in the following terms:

• Under inspection – Your device is being checked
• Work in progress – Your device is getting repaired
• Ready for delivery – Your device is repaired and is ready to be delivered
• Delivered – You have accepted the delivery of your device
• Cancelled – Your service order is cancelled

Xiaomi Redmi 5A 3GB/32GB model now available offline in India for Rs. 7,499

Xiaomi launched the highly anticipated "Desh ka smartphone" the Redmi 5A in India last month. It was the most affordable offering from Xiaomi to the Indian market starting at Rs. 4,999 for the 2GB/16GB model and Rs. 6,999 for the 3GB/32GB model.

So far, both models were available for purchase via Flipkart, Mi.com and Mi Home stores across the country. However, now in order to boost offline sales, Xiaomi has started selling the higher 3GB/32GB Redmi 5A model via offline mobile stores across the country. 

The pricing is a bit higher at Rs. 7,499, which is Rs. 500 more than the online price. Do note that, Xiaomi usually sells its phones in the offline market at a slightly higher price than than online. It comes in Dark Grey, Gold and Rose Gold color.

Talking about the specs, the Redmi 5A features 5-inch HD display, quad-core Snapdragon 425 processor, 13MP rear camera with an LED flash, 5MP front facing camera and 3000mAh battery. It runs Android Nougat based MIUI 9 out of the box.

Oreo for Xiaomi Mi A1 reportedly enables fast charging

The Mi A1 was Xiaomi's first Android One smartphone and shipped with stock Android Nougat. Currently the company is beta testing Oreo for the Mi A1, and folks over at TelecomTalk have already managed to install the update, and came across an interesting feature.

According to the publication, with the Oreo update, Xiaomi has enabled fast charging support for the Mi A1. As a result the phone now charges from zero to 100 percent in 92 minutes, compared to the earlier two hours of charge time. 

Do note that the Mi A1 charging speed was tested using OnePlus 5T charger and not the Mi A1 bundled charger. The lack of fast charging despite having USB Type-C port was a let down in the Mi A1, and Xiaomi appears to have fixed it with the Oreo update.

The source also claims that apps are loading much faster and animations are smoother with the Oreo update. There's also revamped quick settings and setting section as well. Following the update, the Mi A1 will also receive Oreo features including picture-in-picture (PiP) mode, notification channels, autofill, smart text selection, adaptive icons, notification dots and more.

The official Oreo update for the Mi A1 should be out soon.

Rumor: Xiaomi Mi Max 3 to feature 7-inch 18:9 display, dual-cameras

The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 was released in India back in July this year (debut in China in May) featuring a large 6.4-inch Full HD display, Xiaomi's favorite Snapdragon 625 processor and a massive 5300mAh battery. Now according to a rumor coming out of China, the follow up model, Mi Max 3 will have a larger display than the Mi Max 2.

The source claims that Mi Max 3 will sports a bigger 7-inch Full HD+ display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. Xiaomi will fit the large display without increasing the overall size. This means Mi Max 3 will have a modern design, where the top and bottom bezels will be trimmed to stretch the screen.

The Mi Max 3 is rumored to launch in two variants: a base model equipped with Snapdragon 630, and top model featuring Snapdragon 660. Moving on the Mi Max 3 is also said to be equipped dual-camera setup and a slightly bigger 5500mAh battery. It will also support Quick Charge 3.0. 

Unfortunately the exact details on the specs and launch date is still a mystery. But we can expect Mi Max 3 to come with rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, 3GB/4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB storage.

Currently, Xiaomi is offering Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus with 18:9 aspect screen, and it appears that the company is bringing this feature to other series as well. Rumors also has it that Xiaomi's next flagship the Mi 7 will sport 6-inch 18:9 screen, with the phone slated to be the first to utilize Snapdragon 845 chip.

Xiaomi India Mi Home No. 1 Mi Fan Sale: Discounts on smartphones and accessories till January 1, 2018

Xiaomi India recently conducted No.1 Mi Fan sale online on December 20 and 21. Now the Chinese device maker is back with another sale, but this time at their Mi Home store, where it is offering discounts on smartphones and accessories.

For the unaware Xiaomi Mi Home store are physical stores where you can experience and buy Xiaomi products. There are total 15  Mi Home stores in the country spread across  Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune.

The sale is now live and will run till January 1, 2018.

In addition, during the sale period, the Mi Home stores will have a wishbox. Customers purchasing products from Mi Home can write a list of items they wish for and put in the wishbox. Xiaomi will pick up five winners and fullfil their wishes.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 reportedly replaced by Redmi 5 Plus

The Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are Xiaomi's most affordable phones with near-bezel-less design and a display with 18:9 aspect ratio. They were unveiled in China last month.

However, for quite some time rumors had it that Xiaomi will also launch the Redmi Note 5 soon. But that's not happening anytime soon, because the phone is already launched.

A super moderator on Xiaomi's official forum claims that the Redmi Note 5 was replace by the Redmi 5 Plus. According the moderator Xiaomi has dropped the Note moniker at the moment, so there won't be any other phone, and Redmi 5 Plus will be the brand's only large-screen affordable model for now. 

“The wait is finally over, Xiaomi has finally decided to release the Redmi Note 5, wait!!! I heard its called the Redmi 5 Plus? No kidding?? There was a name change? Well yes folks, the 2 new Redmi Note sized phones are named Redmi 5 for the 5.7″ and Redmi 5 Plus for the 5.99”, the moderator said.

However, there's a possibility that Xiaomi could launch the Redmi 5 Plus in India and some other market as the Redmi Note 5. This is because the Redmi Note 4 was one of the best selling smartphone in the country. And Note 4 users are eagerly waiting for the launch of Redmi Note 5.

Do note that Xiaomi is yet to officialy confirm this report.

To recap the specs, the Redmi 5 comes with 5.7-inch HD+ display, Snapdragon 450 chip, 2GB/3GB RAM, 16GB/32GB storage, 12MP/5MP camera and 3300mAh battery. The Redmi 5 Plus on the other hand has 5.99-inch Full HD+ display, Xiaomi's favorite Snapdragon 625 chip, 3GB/4GB RAM, 32GB/64GB storage,  12MP/5MP camera and 4000mAh battery.

Both models have fingerprint scanner, dedicated slot for dual-SIM and microSD card and support for 4G VoLTE. The Redmi 5 price starts at Rs. 7,800, while the Plus models starts at Rs. 10,000 in China.

Xiaomi Mi A1 Red Edition lands in India

Xiaomi recently released a Mi A1 Red Edition in Indonesia, and now it has reached Indian shores.

The Mi A1 Red Edition will be priced cheaper than the other color variants at Rs. 12,999 for a limited period. To remind you, the Mi A1 was launched for Rs. 14,999, and recently received permanent price cut of Rs. 1,000. So the the Gold, Rose Gold and Black hues of Mi A1 currently sells for Rs. 13,999.

Only a limited number of the Red Mi A1 will be up for grabs at Rs. 12,999 in a special sale via Mi.com on December 20 and 21. After that it will retail at the regular price of Rs. 13,999 on Mi.com, Flipkart, Mi Home Store and Mi Preferred Partner stores.

The Mi A1 is Xiaomi's first Android One smartphone developed in partnership with Google, and runs stock Android Nougat instead of MIUI ROM. Currently Oreo is in beta testing phase for the device.

It is fueled by 3080mAh battery, and supports dual-SIM, 4G LTE, VoLTE, WiFi, Bluetooth, IR Blaster, USB Type-C and GPS for connectivity. It has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Xiaomi announces Android Oreo closed beta program for Mi MIX 2

Xiaomi has announced Android Oreo closed beta program for the Mi MIX 2, under which users will be able to test Android Oreo ROM before the official release. The Android Oreo beta will be tested on MIUI 9 China ROM, but it is applicable to all regions.

Since this is a closed beta only a limited number of users will get the chance to test it. To be eligible for the beta program, your MI MIX 2 should run MIUI China Aplha ROM, and you must be active on the MIUI forum. If you have got both boxes ticked, than you can check the procedure on  how to apply for the program here (Link). The last date to join the program is December 24, and eligible members will be selected by December 27.

As mentioned earlier, Oreo for Mi MIX 2 will be tested on MIUI China ROM, but it is likely to come to MIUI Global ROM as well in the coming weeks. As a reminder the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 was launched running Android Nougat based MIUI 8, and received MIUI 9 Stable Global ROM last month.

Recently Xiaomi started testing Android Oreo on the Android One backed Mi A1. The beta version was rolled out for eligible members who joined the beta program. The official Oreo roll out for Mi A1 is likely to take place by the end of this month, or early January. 

We can expect Xiaomi to open Oreo beta program for other popular devices such as Mi Max 2, Redmi Note 4 and and other devices in near future.

Xiaomi gives the Mi A1 a Red paint job

Xiaomi has launched a new  Red color version of its Mi A1 Android One device. In recent times Samsung, Oppo and OnePlus have launched red color version of their popular device (Galaxy S8, Oppo F5 & OnePlus 5T respectively).

The Red Mi A1 has been released in Indonesia, which was the second market after India to get the Android One based device. It carries a price tag of Rp 3099000 ($228 | Rs. 14,500) and is available via Lazada.

There is no word on whether the Red variant will make it outside Indonesia. In India, the Mi A1 is offered in Gold, Rose Gold and Black color, and is priced Rs. 13,999.

Apart from the new paint job, the core specs of the Red Mi A1 is same as the regular variant.

To recollect, the Mi A1 features 5.5-inch Full HD 2.5D curved glass display with Gorilla Glass protection and comes with octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, 12MP dual-camera, 5MP selfie camera, fingerprint scanner and 3080mAh battery.

Beta Oreo update for Xiaomi Mi A1 now available

The Mi A1 is Xiaomi's first Android One offering for the Indian market, and shipped with stock Android 7.1.1 Nougat. It was promised to get Android Oreo later this year, and last week, Xiaomi started recruitment process for Android Oreo beta testers via Mi Community India, as well as MIUI Global Forum.

Now Xiaomi has officially started testing Oreo for the Mi A1, as it has pushed the beta build over-the-air to eligible beta testers.

The Oreo beta update weighs at 1.1GB in size, and also include December Android security patch along with native Oreo features like Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode, notification channels, adaptive icons, notification dots, smart text selection, Autofill API and more.

As for the official Oreo release, once Xiaomi has quashed the bugs, and made the build stable, it will be rolled out to the public, which is likely to happen towards the end of this month or in early January 2018.

To recollect the Xiaomi Mi A1 is currently one of the best smartphone available in the market in the sub Rs. 15,000 segment. Price drop: Xiaomi Mi A1 gets Rs. 1000 permanent price cut, now available for Rs. 13,999

The Xiaomi Mi A1 is currently one of the best smartphone under Rs. 15,000 boasting stock Android and dual-camera setup. It made its debut in India in September this year for Rs. 14,999 as a Flipkart exclusive, and recently was selling for Rs. 12,999 for limited period during Flipkart's Big Shopping days sale (December 7-9).

However, now Xiaomi has announced a permanent price cut of Rs. 1,000 on the Mi A1. With the price cut into effect, the Xiaomi Mi A1 will be up for grabs at Rs. 13,999. 

At the new reduced price the Mi A1 will be available via Mi.com, Flipkart, physical Mi Home stores, and other offline mobile stores.

Xiaomi Mi A1 picks up December security patch

The Android One backed Xiaomi Mi A1 is the latest phone to get the December Android security update, which brings many fixes for vulnerabilities to improve the security of the device

Along with December 2017 security patch, the update also improves the overall stability of the device and optimizes the devices performance. Lastly it also includes general bug fixes as well.

The update weighs at 153MB in size and is rolling out over-the-air. If you don't immediately see the download & install notification, try checking manually, by going to Settings > About phone > System updates.

This is the benefit of owning an Android One device. While Xiaomi's MIUI running phone receives security update very late, the Android One backed Mi A1 gets the latest Android security update every month. This is because Android One devices are designed to experience the best Android has to offer. The Mi A1 is also expected to get Android Oreo update before the end of 2017.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi has also started testing Android Oreo beta for Mi A1 with select users. It also has December 2017 security patch.

Xiaomi Mi Max, Mi Max Prime are receiving MIUI 9 Global Stable update

Xiaomi recently rolled out MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM for the selfie-centric Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite. And now the update has been rolled out to Mi Max and its India exclusive variant Mi Max Prime.

For Mi Max, the update arrives as version V9.1.1.0.NBCMIEI, while for the Mi Max Prime the version is V9.1.2.0.NBDMIEI, and the MIUI 9 download package weighs in at 1.5GB for both.

To get the latest MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM on Mi Max and Mi Max Prime, you will need to open the updater app on you device and check for the new OTA update. If it is not available don't worry, the update is being seeded in phases so it may take some time to reach your device.

If you are impatient, there is an another method where you have to manually download the Recovery ROM to get the update installed. If your device is running MIUI Global Beta ROM, you can upgrade to MIUI 9 Stable by downloading the fast boot ROM.
