Toshiba's new ultra-portable Protege X30 offers 18 hours of battery life

Toshiba has introduced its latest business oriented ultra-portable notebook called Protege X30, that measures at 15.9mm thin (0.62-inches) and weighs at just 2.3 pounds. Even with the light weight slim design, the notebook promises an impressive battery life of up to 18 hours.

The notebook is encased in a magnesium alloy "Tough Body" chassis with shock-absorbing measures and a patented honeycomb reinforcement technology for increased durability. It has also passed the Mil-SPEC-810G standard for extreme temperature, vibration, shock, humidity, drop and dust.

The Toshiba Protege X30 features 13.3-inch Full HD touchscreen display and is powered by 7th-gen Intel Core processor, with up to 16GB RAM and up to 512GB PCIe SSD.

As for ports, it gets two USB type-C, USB 3.0 port, an HDMI port, headphone/mic combo and a microSD card slot. It supports WiFi 802.11ac and Bluetooth for wireless connectivity.

Since, the laptop is targeted at business', it comes with enterprise-level security features like face authentication, fingerprint reader, trusted platform module, bitlocker drive encryption, device guard, credential guard, smart card reader and security lock slot solutions.

The Toshiba Protege X30 runs Windows 10 Pro, and starts at $1499 and is available for purchase at the company's website. It is backed by a three-year warranty.

Toshiba Protege X20W convertibe with 16 hours battery announced

Earlier this week at CES 2017, Japan based Toshiba launched Protege X20W, a Windows 10 convertible laptop with 360-degree dual-action hinge that apart from laptop, can be used in four different modes — Table, Tabletop, Presentation and Audience.

The Toshiba Protege X20 sports 12.5-inch Full HD touch display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection and is powered by 7th gen Intel Core Kaby Lake processor. It comes with TruPen for taking notes or drawing on the screen that can detect 2,048 levels of pressure and two IR cameras for Windows Hello facial recognition. The convertible can run for up to 16 hours on a single charge.

Toshiba DynaPad 2-in-1 Windows tablet up for pre-order in the U.S for $569.99

Toshiba's dynaPad 2-in-1 Windows 10 tablet that was introduced at IFA 2015 is up for pre-order from company website for $569.99. It will also hit Microsoft stores later this month. The company says the dynaPad is the world's thinnest and lightest Windows tablet that measures 6.9mm thin and weighs 1.28 pounds (580g)

The Toshiba dynaPad tablet comes with a Wacom Active Electrostatics (ES) TruPen that has 2,048 levels of pressure for high-precision writing on the tablet’s 12-inch diagonal WUXGA+ (1920 × 1280 pixels) IPS display with anti-reflection and anti-fingerprint coating.  

It is powered by 1.44GHz Intel Atom x5 Z8300 processor paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB flash storage, further expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB) The tablet sports 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front facing camera. Connectivity options include 2 x micro USB 2.0 ports, 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and a micro  HDMI port. It offers battery life of 7 hours.

Toshiba is also offering a special keyboard dock for its dynaPad, when attached, the tablet can be used as a laptop.

Sony acquires Toshiba's image sensor business for $155 million

Sony has acquired Toshiba's image sensor business for 19 billion yen that translates to $155 million. As a result of the acquisition, Toshiba will transfer semiconductor fabrication facilities, equipment and related assets of Toshiba's 300mm wafer production line located at Oita City.

Under the agreement, Toshiba's 48,800 sq m image sensor manufacturing plant in Oita City and approximately 1,100 employees will be transferred over to the Sony. The facilities will operate under Sony Semiconductor Corporation ("SCK"), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony, which will be dedicated primarily to the production of image sensor.

The deal is at the "memorandum of understanding" and the transfer is expected to be completed within the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016, subject to regulatory approvals. Following the Transfer, Sony and SCK plan to operate the semiconductor fabrication facilities as "fabrication facilities of SCK", primarily to manufacture CMOS image sensors. 

Sony is already a dominant player in the image sensor market, with its products used in its own Xperia lineup and phones made by Apple, China’s Xiaomi and India’s Micromax to name a few. They are used also in DSLRs made by Nikon and its own Alpha models.

Toshiba said that after withdrawing from the CMOS image sensors business it will concentrate on products where it has high technological advantage, and aim to improve the profitability of its system LSI business. Interestingly, Toshiba is also looking to merge its PC division with Fujitsu and Sony spinoff Vaio. The company was hit by massive accounting scandal and decided to exit several of its businesses to raise cash.

Masashi Muromachi, who became Toshiba’s CEO following the accounting scandal, has promised to restructure lower-margin businesses and the deal for the image sensor business would be the beginning of the restructuring. (via)

Toshiba, Fujitsu and Vaio PC divisions could join forces

Three Japanese electronics companies Toshiba, Fujitsu and Sony spinoff Vaio are reportedly thinking about merging their PC divsions to create the largest PC company in Japan, reports Nekkei.

The three companies are in negotiations, and are expected to sign a basic agreement this month and could launch the combined company in April 2016. Toshiba, Fujitsu and Investment fund Japan Industrial Partners, Vaio's top shareholder are likely to invest 30 percent each in the new company. 

The report futher states that Vaio is likely to be the remaining company if the deal takes place, which means the new company may bear the Vaio name, with Toshiba and Fujitsu transferring staff, investment and operations to the combined entity.

The move would create a supergroup and control more than 30 percent of Japan's PC market making it bigger than Lenovo, the current market leader, which has about 26 percent share in Japan.

While Toshiba, Fujitsu and Vaio are all Japan based, each has some international presence, with Fujitsu offering PCs in Europe as well as the U.S, Toshiba has a strong presence in North America, while Vaio, a Sony spinoff in 2014 recently entered the U.S market with its Canvas Z tablet.

Even if the three companies come together and did merge their PC divisions, they would relatively be a small player in the global PC market which is currently dominated by Lenovo, HP, and Dell. However, the combined company could take on the lower-placed entrants like Asus and Acer.

Toshiba dynaPad Windows 10 tablet announced

Toshiba unveiled a new Windows 10 product- dynaPad tablet, a 12-inch 2-in-1 device that's been made specifically for writing. Microsoft touts it to be a "great digital notebook specially designed to encourage your creativity, and also enhance productivity."

dynaPad has the Wacom Active Electrostatics (ES) TruPen that has 2,048 levels of pressure for high-precision writing on the tablet’s 12-inch diagonal WUXGA+ (1920 × 1280 pixels) IPS display with anti-reflection and anti-fingerprint coating. 

It also has a detachable keyboard dock. Inside there is an Intel Atom processor clocked at 1.44GHz paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB/128GB of flash storage. It offers battery life of 7 hours.

Other features include 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, microSD card slot, micro HDMI port and two micro USB ports. It weighs about 1.25 pounds, while the tablet and keyboard combined weight is about 2.2 pounds, making it the lightest 12-inch 2-in-1 in the world, according to Toshiba.

Toshiba's dynaPad will go on sale first in Japan in December for the price of ¥130,000 ($1,100). It will be launched in the US and Europe sometime in early 2016.

Toshiba unveils a refreshed Chromebook 2

Toshiba has announced a upgraded version of of its popular Chromebook 2 laptop. The original Toshiba Chromebook 2 used an entry-level Intel Celeron N2840 SoC which didn't give it much performance.

The new Chromebook will feature either a 5th generation Intel Core i3 or Celeron processor- both geared towards performance. The other hardware will remain the same.

It sports 13.3-inch 1080p IPS display with wide viewing angles and gets a new LED-backlit keyboard. The Chromebook can be configured with up to 4GB RAM and houses 16GB storage.

Other features include WiFi 802.11ac, USB 3.0 & USB 2.0 ports, HDMI output, security lock slot and SD card reader. There are stereo front facing speakers tuned by Skullcandy, dual-array microphones and HD webcam. It boasts 8 hours of battery life on a single charge.

The new Toshiba Chromebook 2 is priced at $329.99 for the model with an Intel Celeron processor, or $429.99 for the Intel Core i3 variant. It will be available for purchase in October 2015 at participating retailers, as well as Toshiba's US website.

Toshiba Satellite Radius 12 is a convertible laptop with 4K screen

At IFA 2015 trade show in Berlin Toshiba launched its Windows 10-based Satellite Radius 12 convertible laptop. The company claims that the laptop is "world's first 12.5-inch Ultra HD 4K convertible" laptop. The notebook display is attached with a hinge that tranforms the the display in different modes - laptop, tablet, tabletop, presentation and audience. 

Toshiba Satellite Radius 12 features 12.5-inch display that comes in either Full HD resolution or 4K UHD (3840 x 2160 pixels) resolution options with Corning Gorilla Glass protection. The display supports wide-gamut RGB color space reproduction. It is equipped with Intel's latest Skylake processor with options up to Core i7 processor and up to 8GB RAM. 

The convertible has an IR HD camera to complement Windows Hello feature for biometric authentication such as face detection to login. It supports USB Type-C port and has built in harman kardon speakers tuned by DTS Sound combine to deliver crisp, natural audio. Since it runs Windows 10, the convertible supports Cortana, Continuum and more. It is fitted with a dedicated Cortana button. The laptop keyboard features Toshiba's precision trackpad for improved scrolling experience.

Toshiba's Satellite Radius 12 will be available in the U.S in Q4 this year. The pricing is not yet know.

Toshiba Encore 10 tablet, Encore 10K 2-in-1 Windows 10 tablets announced

Toshiba has announced two new tablets, one designed for business uses, the Encore 10, the other Encore 10K, a premium 2-in-1 tablet ideal for school. Both are basically twins, the difference being that Encore 10K comes with a keyboard dock, that also functions as an extra battery. They will be available with Windows 10 or Windows 10 professional.

Toshiba Encore 10 and Encore 10K features 10.1-inch Full HD IPS display and is powered by an quad-core Intex Atom X5 processor paired with 4GB LPDDR3 RAM. On-board storage is 64GB, further expandable via MicroSD card.. It supports Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity. There is also a Full HD webcam for video chatting.

In tablet mode (Encore 10) it has, micro HDMI port and micro-USB port and when keyboard is attached (Encore 10K) users get addition connectivity including full-size RGB, HDMI, Gigabit ethernet and three micro USB 3.0 ports.

The Encore 10 delivers up to 7 hours of battery like. The Encore 10K comes with a keyboard dock and offers up to an 11-hour battery life when docked.  They are built with durable magnesium alloy and weighs 590g (without keyboard) and 1kg when combined with keyboard dock.

The Encore 10 is priced at $299 for Windows 10 model and $399 for Windows 10 Professional, the Encore 10K costs $479. Both will be available for purchase from retail stores and ToshibaDirect.com starting mid-September.

CES 2015 : Toshiba Announce Portable Storage Devices

Alongside the Encore 2 Write and Portege Z20t, Toshiba also announced new storage and back devices at CES 2015. They include Transfer Jet, FlashAir III wireless SD card, Canvio Connect II and Canvio Basics portable Hard drives.

Toshiba released the first TransferJet adapter for iOS devices. It also announced the 2nd gen USB adapter for Windows and MicroUSB adapter for Android. The TransferJet adapter offers a fast wireless data transfer of 560 mbps between two points - PC and mobile device. It will be available in March 2015 in Japan, followed by Europe, the Americas and Asia  for $80 (Rs.5000).

The Toshiba FlashAir III wireless SD card transfers data on Wi-Fi network. Images videos and files can be transferred wirelessly. It features enhanced photo sharing and web interface for managing your files on a PC. Users can share and easily manage files from a web browser on a PC. The card will be available in two capacities 16GB and 32GB. It also supports simultaneous access from up to seven devices. Toshiba also offers a FlashAir mobile app for iOS and Android-based devices. It will be available in March 2015 and will cost $80 (Rs. 5,000) for 16GB variant and $100 (Rs. 6,000) for 32GB variant.

The Canvio Connect II portable hard drive comes with remote access via PogoPlug and local and cloud backup. The PogoPlug feature can be used to view and share files over the internet and stream content to mobile devices. It comes in storage capacities of 500GB, 1TB, 2TB and 3TB storage. You can secure backups with user defined password protection or schedule backups for your local files and folders to a 10GB Cloud service. The Canvio Connect II portable hard drive is available in five colors: black, white, blue, red and satin gold. The Canvio Connect II 500GB, 1TB and 2TB will cost $100 (Rs.6,000), $120 (Rs. 7,500) and $ 200 (Rs. 12,000) respectively. The 3TB storage variant will release later this year.

Finally, the Canvio Basic is a 3TB  portable hard drive. The portable hard drive supports USB 3.0 for rapid transfer speeds. The Cais equipped with shock sensor and ramp loading technology that is designed to keep your digital files safer if accidentally dropped. It is available in White, silver or Black colours. The 3TB Toshiba Canvio Basics portable hard drive will also be available for purchase in March for $190 (Rs. 11,500).

CES 2015 : Toshiba Announce Portege Z20t Laptop-Tablet Hybrid

Toshiba announced a new detachable Laptop/Tablet Hybrid - Portege Z20t at CES 2015, Las Vegas. The Laptop comes with a detachable keyboard and also support Wacom-made digitizer pen with 2,048 points of sensitivity for advanced levels of handwriting recognition.

Toshiba claims that the Portege Z20t provide up to 9 hours of battery life and with the keyboard battery combined, it can deliver up to 17.5 hours of battery life.

Coming to the specs, the Portege Z20t features a 12.5-inch full-HD IPS display and is powered by the fanless Intel Core M processors. The Laptop will be available with options of Windows 7 Professional or Windows 8.1, 4GB or 8GB RAM and 128GB, 256GB and 512GB of SSD storage.

Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, Micro-USB, Micro-HDMI, Ethernet, RGB, and microSD card slot. The connectivity option on keyboard include HDMI port, Ethernet port, and two USB 3.0 ports.

The Portege Z20t with keyboard and digitizer pen will be available in market later this month and will cost $1,399 (Rs. 88,600). The standalone tablet will cost $899 (Rs. 57,000) and will be available in February.

CES 2015 : Toshiba Announce Encore 2 Write Tablet With Wacom Pen Support

Toshiba launched its latest Windows Tablet - the Encore 2 Write. The tablet come in 8-inch and 10-inch display variants with Toshiba’s TruPen with Wacom Feel stylus technology. The tablet sports a satin gold matte finish.

The 8-inch and 10-inch Encore 2 Write offer a resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels. The Tablets are powered by an Intel Atom processor paired with 2GB RAM and 64GB inbuilt storage [microSD card support upto 128GB]. The Tablet runs Windows 8.1 with Bing. Camera features include 8-megapixel rear camera and HD Webcam on front. Other features include micro-USB port and a micro-HDMI port.

The tablet comes with a one-year subscription to Microsoft Office 365 along with preinstalled apps like TruNote, TruRecorder, and TruCapture.

The Toshiba Encore2 Write tablets will be available in United States starting January 11. The 8-inch and 10-inch variant will cost $350 (Rs.22,000) and $500 (Rs. 31,500) respectively.

Toshiba Launches 'Share Board', a 24 inch tablet that also works as a Monitor

Toshiba have announced a new tablet to please the Business environment dubbed "Share Board" in Japan. Share Board is a 24 inch tablet that can be used as a small TV via HDMI or a monitor that can mirror handset content via mircast. 

The tablet sports a 24-inch Full HD LCD display (1.920 x 1.080 pixels) powered by a dual-core processor clocked at 1.0 GHz, 1.5 GB of RAM memory, 16 GB space of internal storage, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, and Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean operating system. The Shared Board has two 2 W speakers, weighs around 4 kilograms making it impossible to carry around. 

Shareboard comes with an infrared remote control , making it more like a smart TV. The size of the display offers interesting features such as split screen mode, that allows you to split the screen in two and play with two apps at the same time and enabling multitasking.

There is no information about the pricing and global availability of the Tablet.
