Sony's IMX318 22.5MP sensor packs built-in hybrid AF and 3-axis image stabilization

Sony has announced a new Exmor RS sensor for smartphones, the IMX318, a type 1/2.6-inch stacked 22.5 megapixels CMOS image sensor, which is more compact, yet promises greater image quality and higher performance.

The new Exmor RS is equipped with a built-inch high-speed hybrid auto-focus (AF) for fast focus in just 0.03 seconds. It also has a 3-axis electronic image stabilization technology built into its internal signal processor for video. This means recording smooth 4K videos with little camera shake.

It also features the smallest pixel size of 1.0μm (micrometers) we have seen on a phone camera, which means it will take less room inside the smartphone, and improved photography in low-light conditions.

Besides superior photos, the new sensor will also allow for 4K recording at 30fps (frames per second), while 1080p offers 120fps, and 720 will offer 240fps.
