Bluetooth 5.0 brings 2x speed, 4x range, 800 percent more capacity

Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has announced the Bluetooth 5.0 standard that offers double the wireless data speeds, four times the range for low-energy connection and data broadcasting capacity will increase by 800%.

With Bluetooth 5.0 standard users will be able to connect to more Bluetooth enabled devices at the same time. The data transfer speed has increased by eight time, that will increase the adoption and deployment of beacons and location based services in the IoT (Internet of Things) segment.

SIG Executive Director Mark Powell states that “increasing operation range will enable connections to IoT devices that extend far beyond the walls of a typical home, while increasing speed supports faster data transfers and software updates for devices.”

Bluetooth SIG expects that there will be 371 million Bluetooth location beacons distributed world-wide by 2020. The Bluetooth 5.0 standard will be commercially available later this year or early 2017.
