Facebook introduces Messenger Lite for emerging markets


Last year in June, social-networking giant Facebook launched the Lite version of its mobile app aimed at emerging markets like India where internet speed is slow. Now Facebook has launched Messenger Lite which is aimed at emerging market and designed to work in areas with slower internet connection.

The Lite version offers key features of Messenger such as send text messages, photos and links, and receiving stickers, but doesn't support video calls, voice calls or quick payments. The app is sized under 10MB so it's fast to install, and quick to start up. It sports the same bolt logo as Messenger app, but with colors reversed, the bolt being blue with a white chat bubble background. 

Messenger Lite will be initially available for Android users in Kenya, Malaysia, Tunisia, Sri Lanka and Venezuela, and will roll out to other countries including India in the coming months.

Facebook says more than 1 billion people around the world use Messenger, and with Messenger Lite the social networking giant wants more people to communicate with their friends and family, no matter what technology they have access to.
