Xiaomi teases MI 5X & MIUI 9 ahead of July 26 announcement

Xiaomi is all set to unveil its next smartphone Mi 5X along with the MIUI 9 software on Wednesday, July 26. Just days ahead of the official release, Xiaomi has revealed few details about the MIUI 9 via teaser images, and Mi 5X via a video.

Here's what MIUI 9 will bring to eligible Xiaomi devices
  • MIUI 9 will get three new themes in addition to the current default theme: No Boundary, Color Fantasy and Color Black. In the new themes the dock icons at the bottom don't have texts, giving the home screen a neat look.
  • New design in lock-screen shortcut: The lock-screen shortcuts can be accessed by simply swiping to the right on the screen. The revamped lock-screen shortcuts include Torch, Mi Remote, Mi Home, Mi Pay, and Transport Card, to name a few.
  • Split Screen: This feature lets you run two apps side by side for multi-tasking. It is already available on Mi Max 2 and Mi 6, and MIUI 9 will bring Split Screen functionality to Mi 6, Mi MIX, Mi Note 2, Mi Max, Mi 5m Redmi Note 4X and more devices.
  • Xiaomi has also removed unessential features like Child Mode, WiWide (provides public WiFi networks to stores and restaurants in China), Contact Card, Showtime (Caller Profile Video) to simplify and optimize MIUI 9.

To ensure MIUI 9 offers a great experience to users in terms of stability, smoothness and battery back up, only a limited amount of devices will get MIUI in the first batch, which includes Mi 6, Redmi Note 4 (Qualcomm version), Redmi Note 4X. The second batch Mi devices include only Mi 2 and Mi 2S. The update will be pushed by stages.

As for the video teaser, it shows off the design and dual-cameras of the Mi 5X. Recently Xiaomi also released official renders of the device, so there is nothing new revealed in the teaser video.

The Mi 5X will flaunt a  premium look sporting all-metal unibody design with antenna bands placed on top and bottom of the edges of the back panel. The fingerprint scanner is also located at the rear.

According to reports, the Mi 5X will feature 5.5-inch Full HD display, Snapdragon 625 processor, 4GB RAM, dual-cameras with optical zoom (Sony IMX386 sensor and a Samsung S5K3M3 CMOS sensor), 16MP selfie camera, MIUI 9, USB Type-C port and 3000mAh battery. There are also rumors of a second variant featuring Snapdragon 660 chip, 6GB RAM and 128GB storage.

The MI 5X is rumored to be priced at CNY 1999 ($295 | Rs. 19,000), and is expected to go on sale August 1.
