He also said that Yu brand is not limited to smartphones, and people can expect YU branded wearable devices in the near future.

“Micromax already had tailwind behind it and were growing in numbers month after month, quarter after quarter. We were thinking about what’s next and we wanted to target a different set of users – the tech natives and digital natives – the nerds. They want to customize their phones. What were we doing for them? And with that thought YU was born,” Sharma explained to BGR India.

To recap, Yu partnered with Cyanogen last year to offer a customised user experience to buyers of its first smartphone - the Yureka. The company adapted an online sale strategy to counter other brands like Motorola and Xiaomi.

The Yu Yureka smartphone has received an overwhelming response in India. It was unveiled in December last year and was sold exclusive via Amazon India for Rs. 8,999.

In last week's flash sale, 30,000 unite of Yureka went out of stock in just six seconds. The next flash sale is scheduled for March 5.
