Nike's Back to the Future style-power-lace shoes arrive in 2016
Those who are fans of Back to the Future movie will immediately recognize this product from Nike.
In celebration of Back to the Future Day (October 21, 2015), Nike has introduced 2015 Nike Mag. It is a real life version of the futuristic power-lacing sneakers worn by Marty McFly in the Back to the Future II film in 1989. The Nike Mag features a working self-trying mechanism
"This innovation advances what was coined the Nike Mag’s “power laces,” combining the archetype invention with digital technology. The result is an individually responsive system that senses the wearer’s motion to provide adaptive on-demand comfort and support. But this is just the first iteration." said the company.
The Nike Mag seen in Back to the Future II was designed by Tinker Hatfield for Universal Studios and has since been a figment of the imagination of Back To The Future fanatics. In 2011, Nike released the Nike Mag 2011, but without self-lacing capabilities.
“We started creating something for fiction and we turned it into fact, inventing a new technology that will benefit all athletes.” said Mark Parker, Nike, Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer “By imagining the future, we create it. Product that comes alive, with on-demand comfort and support when you need, product that senses you and adapts to you is right around the corner,” he added.
The first pair of 2015 Nike Mag was recently gifted to Micheal J. Fox. It is a limited edition release and will only be available via auction, with all proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
