Google engineer says "Don’t buy the OnePlus USB Type-C adapter"
Benson Leung, a Google engineer working on the Pixel C laptop warned s has warned that the OnePlus USB Type-C adapter or charging cable is not fit for use. According to Leung, OnePlus adapter is not compliant with standard specifications, and is not fit for use especially with Google Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P smartphones, as well as the Pixel C laptop.
“Don’t buy this #USB #TypeC adapter for your Chromebook Pixel or Nexus 6P/5X phone. It uses the wrong identifier resistor,” Leung wrote in a Google+ post yesterday. “Oneplus needs to get the message that their accessories are out of spec…”
Leung explained that many USB Type-C equipped devices including Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P are designed to draw 3A power. The OnePlus USB Type-C adapter, which is meant for converting Type-A connector to the new Type-C connector, cannot convert the power to 3A. Only the USB Type-C 1.1 specifications allows for power delivery of up to 3A. Since the adapter is not able to provide 3A power, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P will attempt to draw 3A current, which could lead to damage.
"OnePlus’ USB Type-C cable “is not spec compliant.” he added “I don’t recommend anyone with a Nexus use it.” in another comment, he wrote,
Leung also said that he has been reviewing other cables on Amazon and is even contemplating starting a blog, where he can document all his tests.
