Report: LG, Samsung to supply OLED display for future iPhones

Earlier this month, there were reports that JDI is in talks with Apple to supply OLED display for iPhones in 2018. Now according to a report published on Electronic Times citing unnamed sources states that LG and Samsung's display unit will supply organic emitting diode (Oled) screen for Apple's iPhones.

OLED screens are thinner and offer better picture quality than the mainstay liquid crystal display screens. The OLED panels are expected to be used with iPhones starting in 2018. LG and Samsung are close to a final agreement with Apple for the screens, the report added. Both South Korean tech giants are expected to invest 15 trillion Korean won ($12.8 billion) to expand their display production facility.

LG will repurpose existing LCD lines to the production of  OLED display, which will save money. Both Samsung and LG are likely to receive funding from Apple, and Samsung is said to receive 30 percent less orders than LG for the OLED display.

LG and Samsung are already responsible for the OLED displays used on Apple Watch, although LG could be the sole supplier of the display for the Apple Watch 2.
