Xiaomi plans to ship its 12.5-inch laptop in April 2016
For months now, it has been rumored that Xiaomi is working on its first laptop that would compete with Apple’s MacBook Air. Now a new published report from Digitimes citing supply chain makers states that Taiwan based Invetec will start ODM (original design manufacturing) production of Xiaomi's 12.5-inch laptop.
Invetec will manufacture the laptop at its factory in Shanghai and shipments of the end product will begin in April 2016. The components will be supplied by manufacturers based in China. Xiaomi's 12.5-inch laptop is likely to carry the price tag of CNY 2999 ($470 | Rs. 31,000)
This is not the first time we are hearing about Xiaomi's laptop. Back in October, a report claimed that, Xiaomi is working on two laptop models, one with 12.5-inch and the other 13.-inch and will eneter mass production in Q1 2016. However as per the latest report, Xiaomi's plans have changed and it will launch just the 12.5-inch model.
In September, Richard Lee, Chairman of Inventec said that the company was working with Xiaomi on a laptop. Lee also said that Xiaomi's entry into the laptop industry could shake up the laptop market, the same way it did with the smartphones. Inventec have worked with Xiaomi in the past, handling the assembly of Xiaomi’s smartphones and tablets.
