YU Yutopia launch delayed due to Delhi High Court injunction

Micromax subsidary YU Televenture was expected to announce the Yutopia smartphone on December 7, but pushed the launch date to December 17.

The reason for the delay was because YU was planning to announce something special with the Yutopia. A spokesperson from the company reportedly said that YU has two smartphones line up for release, and didn't want to hold two separate launch events.

However, that is not the case. The real reason behind the delay appears to be an old patent case between Micromax and Ericsson. The Delhi High Court yesterday has reportedly issued bailable warrants against three Micromax's founders, including Rahul Sharma, for contempt of last year's Micromax and Ericsson patent case.

Last year, in November 2014, the Delhi High Court had directed Micromax to pay royalties to Swedish firm Ericsson on the matter of copyright infringement. However, Micromax didn't include its subsidary YU Telventures in the same, and now the court has the same injunction applied to YU as well. The Delhi High Court has restrained YU from importing and selling mobile devices that infringe Ericsson's registered patents without paying royalty.

The next hearing of the case is on December 15, after which we should know more.
