Xiaomi locks Bootloader for Redmi Note 3, Mi 4c, Mi Note Pro

Xiaomi has started locking bootloader for its devices in order to to protect user data safety. The recently launched Redmi Note 3 ships with a locked boot loader, with Mi 4c and Mi Note Pro soon to follow via an firmware update version MIUI 6.1.14.

Xiaomi made the decision in order to prevent third party retailers from selling fake Mi devices or Mi devices with unofficial ROM that contained bloatware and malware. Until now, Xiaomi smartphones came with unlocked bootloaders. With unlocked bootloader, users can take full control of their devices software and also flash mods, custom ROMs and root the device easily.

Some of the changes that will happen after locking the bootloader include-
  • Root will be disabled even if it was enabled before
  • Updating using Recovery mode is only possible if the Mi PC suite is used
  • Devices with locked bootloader can not be updated using Mi Flash. Users will need to unclock bootloader if they want to flash fastboot ROMS.
  • Locked bootloader won't affect OTA updates.
This is a bad news for developers. However, Xiaomi is offering tools to unlock the bootloader for those who like to tweak their devices. To get access to this users will have to fill up a form and after getting Xiaomi's approval, it might take up to 21days for users to get a code to get access to unlock tools.
