Qualcomm's Snapdragon X16 LTE modem offer 1Gbps download speeds for smartphones
Besides new mobile and wearable device SoC, Qualcomm also announced a new super fast LTE chipset, the Snapdragon X16 LTE modem, that is capable of handling Cat. 16 download speeds of up to 1Gbps and upload speeds of up to 150Mbps.
The chipmaker says that, the X16 LTE modem, "is the first commercially announced Gigabit Class LTE chipset designed to deliver fiber-like LTE Category 16 download speeds of up to 1 Gbps". Unfortunately no network providers offer such LTE download speeds at present. So, we'll just have to wait for carriers worldwide to increase their seed.
The X16 LTE modem is built on a 14nm FinFET processor and the Qualcomm RF Transceiver, WTR5975, and is 100 percent faster than the previous X10 LTE model that delivered 450mbps. It uses carrier aggregation and 4 x 4 MIMO using three 20MHz carriers by capturing up to 10 unique streams of LTE data with four antennas and is able to boost the output of each stream to 100mbps when combined with single processing unit.
It supports all major cellular technologies (LTE FDD, LTE TDD, WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, EV-DO, CDMA 1x, and GSM/EDGE), frequency bands, Carrier Aggregation band combinations, LTE dual SIM, LTE Broadcast, HD and Ultra HD Voice over LTE (VoLTE) with single radio voice call continuity to 3G and 2G.
The first commercial product using Qualcomm's Snapdragon X16 LTE modem is expected in H2 (second half) of 2016.
