Spotify plans to launch music streaming service in India

Swedish music streaming service Spotify is reportedly planning to bring its services to India. According to report published by Techcruch, Spotify is looking to expand its presence in Asia. The service is already available in some Asian markets including Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore, and now plans to launch in India and Japan too.

If Spotify starts operating in India, it will face stiff competition from local music streaming services like Saavn, Gaana, Hungama and Wynk Music, which currently are leading the music streaming service market in India. Apple Music, which launched in the country last summer, will also be a competitor.

Before entering India, Spotify will launch in Indonesia by the end of this month and will also make its debut in Japan soon, where it has already established an office some time ago, and was recently on a hiring spree.

Currently, Spotify is one of the most popular music streaming service in the world. It offers both paid subscriptions and free version of its service. The service has 30 million paid users and more than 75 million users from around 58 countries.

With the availability of affordable smartphones in the market and expansion of 4G services, the music and video streaming services in the country is on rise. Earlier this yer, Netflix forayed in the India market, which is one of the leading video streaming service globally.
