BlackBerry discontinues the Classic
Back in December 2014, BlackBerry introduced the BBOS powered Classic, based on Bold 9900's design sporting BlackBerry's traditional form factor, the iconic QWERTY keyboard, but with modern features.
Now BlackBerry is biding farewell to the classic. The struggling Canadian smartphone maker announced that it has discontinued the Classic. Ralph Pini COO and GM for devices at BlackBerry confirmed the news and said Classic has long surpassed the average lifespan of a smartphone in today's market.
"we are updating our smartphone lineup with state of the art devices. As part of this, and after many successful years in the market, we will no longer manufacture BlackBerry Classic."Pini also said that BlackBerry will continue to support BB 10 OS with software updates, and promised the roll out of BB OS 10.3.3 update next month. There will also be a second major update next year. He also said that BlackBerry will now focus on updating its smartphone portfolio.
The news comes after it was reported that BlackBerry is working on three new Android smartphones code-named Neon, Argon and Mercury which will release over the next three quarters.
