Google reportedly cancels its ambitious Project Ara modular smartphone
Google back in May at its I/O event demoed a fully functional Project Ara modular smartphone, and announced that the developer version will release in fall 2016. Now Google's ambitious project to build a modular smartphone may be over.
According to multiple reports, Google is axing Project Ara. The decision to cancel Project Ara is part of Google's effort to unify its various hardware efforts. The report also mentions that Google will no longer invest in project Ara, instead it may license the modular smartphone technology to other hardware partners.
Project Ara was originally a concept called Phoneblocks, which allowed anyone to build a smartphone by selecting its components like camera, battery or screen. In 2013, Motorola (which Google acquired) unveiled Project Ara in partnership with Phoneblocks. It was developed under Google's Advanced Technology and Projects group.
