InFocus to launch Aadhaar enabled smartphone with iris scanner in Q1 2017

U.S based device maker InFocus will soon launch a new smartphone in India that will come with iris scanner to support Aadhaar authentication. This is possible thanks to Standardization Testing and Quality Certification (STQC), that authenticates Iris-recognition devices, used for biometric linked under Adhaar platform.

With the integration of this technology on the device, users will be able to use the phone for applications like opening bank accounts with eKYC and as a cashless micro ATM for paying merchants. It can also be used as a secure and reliable biometric solution in various fields like banking, E-PDS (Electronic Public Distribution System), MNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural employment Guarantee Act) payments and E-governance services such as passport, taxation, healthcare and education.

The phone will utilize IriTech's iris image quality assessment and on-board K7 generation algorithm to offer good quality images and avoid false positivities, while maximizing true positive identification rates. It can capture images under less than two seconds, and under any environment including direct sunlight. The biometric data collected from the device will be encrypted by UIDAI key at chip level to prevent all kinds of information leak and will only be available in the Adhaar server.

The new phone will be a variant of Bingo 20 and will be called M245. It will be 4G VoLTE enabled dual-SIM phone running Android 5.1 Lollipop featuring 4.5-inch display, 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage, microSD card slot and 2300mAh battery.

The phone will be priced around Rs. 12,000 and will release early next year. The company also plans to launch more phones supporting Aadhaar-based biometric authentication in the future.
