Aadhaar-based eKYC verification for mobile numbers becomes mandatory

Back in February, the Supreme Court asked Government of India to verify the identity of all mobile users via Adhaar based E-KYC process across the country.

Now,  Department of Telecom (DoT) has made it mandatory to link your mobile number to Aadhaar. DoT has announced that all telecom operators will have to re-verify all existing mobile subscribers, both postpaid and prepaid, through Adhaar based E-KYC process. This has to be effectively completed within a year.

The process is to ensure identity verification, as well, as the addresses of all mobile phone subscribers in the country to make sure fake subscribers go away.

DoT says that all telecom operators should intimate their existing subscribers through SMS as well as advertisements in print and electronic media about the re-verification. Telecos also have to upload the complete details of the activity on their websites.

For re-verification, telecom operators will send a verification code to the mobile number of their subscribers. Then the operator has to verify the sent code from the subscriber to confirm that the SIM card is physically available with the subscriber.

“After the completion of the Aadhaar based E-KYC process, before updating or overwriting the old subscriber detail in database with the data received through E-KYC process, the licensee will seek confirmation from the subscriber about the re-verification of his / her mobile number after 24 hours through SMS”, reads the notification issued by the telecom department.
