Cat S60, world’s first smartphone with thermal camera launched in India

US based popular rugged phone maker Caterpillar has officially launched the Cat S60 smartphone in India. It is the world's first smartphone with an integrated thermal camera, and is priced at a whooping Rs. 64,999.

As mentioned earlier, the Cat S60 comes with FLIR thermal camera, which is the main highlight of the phone. It works in tandem with the 13MP primary camera, and is capable of detecting heat signature and measure surface temperature (ranging from -20-degree Celsius to 120-degree Celsius) from a distance of up to 50 to 100 feet, though smoke, doors or windows.

Just like the brand's previous phones, the Cat S60 sports a rugged design. It is waterproof and can function underwater, up to depths of 5 meters for an hour, allowing it to be used as an underwater camera. It is also dustproof and MIL-810G certified, meaning it can survive drops of up to 1.8 meters directly on the concrete.

Although it carries a high price tag, the specs on the Cat S60 is similar to what you'll find on a sub Rs. 10,000 smartphone.

The Cat S60 features 4.7-inch HD Gorilla Glass 4 display and is equipped with Snapdragon 617 processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB storage, 5MP front camera and 3800mAh battery. It runs Android Marshmallow out of the box.

Considering the price and specs, there is no doubt, the company will find it difficult to sell the phone, even though it has a thermal camera. However, the company is not here to compete, and is targeting the phone at enterprises or people working in harsh environments or involved in extreme sports, just like Panasonic does with its ToughPad rugged devices.

The Cat S60 will be available through high-end multi brand outlets across the country, and online on Amazon India starting March 17.
