Tesla teases new Model Y compact SUV, will debut in 2019

At a recent Tesla Shareholder Meeting 2017, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, gave a glimpse of the new compact SUV- Tesla Model Y. Musk had first tweeted the shadowy Model Y image in October 2015 and later removed it. This new compact SUV is all set be under mass production in the year 2019.

What’s blazing?
  • New cross-over compact SUV- Model Y
  • Building the model X on the model S platform was “a mistake”
  • Model 3 – key features and production
  • New Electric Semi Truck to be designed by potential customers

Musk was quoted saying “But I think actually we made a mistake in trying to derive the Model X from the Model S platform. It would have been better to just design an SUV the way an SUV should be designed. Design a sedan, the way a sedan should be designed”With an hindsight he emphasized the fact that they got over-confident with Model X, having many amazing features it they could have had brought more features if it was built on different platform rather than on Model S platform. The SUV will be a crossover, one that’s sized smaller than a Model X but bigger than the Model 3.

According to reports the new Tesla Model Y will be built on a new platform and not on Model 3 platform, giving them more flexibility in bringing new and better manufacturing techniques for Model Y that will allow them to reduce the capital expenditure to a great extent. Tesla Chief Elon Musk also wants to reduce up to 95% of the wiring in the Model Y compared to its predecessors, moving away from its standard 12-volt battery architecture to a new electrical system.

Model 3
Apart from that, Tesla is set to begin the manufacturing of Model 3 this July. Although it was initially confirmed that Model 3 would come with dual-motor, i.e. two different motor architectures. While one motor is designed for highway, the other motor is for stop-and-go traffic, maximizing mileage and having incredible acceleration. But to avoid complexity in the initial production stage and to ensure smooth and rapid production, Model 3 will be having very simple configurations focusing on color and wheel size for now. Dual-motor Model 3 will be introduced later on.

Electric Semi Truck
Tesla is also all set to unveil its heavy duty, all electric truck this September. The most extraordinary thing about this is that, for the first time Tesla will be closely collaborating with its potential customers to help them design the truck according their needs. “They already know that it’s going to meet their needs, because they’ve told us what those needs are. So it’ll really just be a question of scaling volume to make as many as we can,” Musk told the shareholders.
