Wikipedia App For Android Updated For A Better Reading Experience

Wikipedia App for Android has been updated. The new update offers offers an improved reading experience, better search and an image-centric design. The new look and functionality improvements are focused on making Wikipedia more usable on mobile devices which host over 33.5 million articles across 287 languages

The app now shows a header image above each relevant article. By tapping on the image it will be shown in full screen with caption and users can swipe through other images within the page. Furthermore, the search functionality has expander with brief description of results and a list of keywords that useres previously searched.

Other new feature include a 'Read More' section at the end of each page which links up to three related pages meant to keep users in the application, exploring the topic further.

Here's the complete changelog -
  • Lead images: experience Wikipedia like never before with a prominent, contextually-relevant image and description at the top of articles
  • Image gallery: tap on images to view them full-screen. Swipe left or right to browse other images within the article
  • Read more: suggestions for further reading at the bottom of articles
  • Search improvements: search results now have quick descriptions below them. There is also a history of your searches when the search box is empty
This looks like a limited update, as it improves the app's usability and is modernized with more emphasis on graphics. The developers say an update for the Wikipedia iOS app will soon be released.
