Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition goes on sale in China for 1799 Yuan
Chinese smartphone maker Meizu has been teasing the Ubuntu-running edition of its MX4 smartphone for a while now. It was also showcased at a couple of events.
Now, the Meizu MX4 Ubuntu edition has gone for sale in China. This the second Ubuntu phone to be released commercially, the first one being BQ Aquarius e4.5 that went on sale in Europe earlier this year.
By comparison BQ's Ubuntu phone is a mid-range phone and costs ($195). It features 4.5-inch display, 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage, microSD slot, 8-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front camera. While, Meizu's Ubuntu phone offers high end specs.
Meizu MX4 Ubuntu edition features 5.36-inch (1920x1152 pixels) IPS display with 15:9 aspect ration and 2.6mm slim bezels on the side. Under the hood there is a 2.1GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6595 processor. It comes equipped with 20.7-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front facing camera. A 3100mAh battery fuels the device.
Ubuntu Phones comes with a new UI called 'Scopes' which will integrate various apps and services into an easy to use interface. For Meizu's Ubuntu phone, a number of Chinese scopes is available from the Ubuntu store including Baidu, Dianping, Weibo, Youku, Sohu and Chinese versions of the Today, Nearby and News aggregation scopes. Web apps are also available for Tmall, Taobao and QQ among others.
Meizu's MX4 Ubuntu edition is available to buy directly from the company's website in China. It is priced at 1799 Yuan ($290 | Rs. 19,000) and will be available in Silver and Golden colors. Meizu also announced that the MX4 Ubuntu edition will soon be sold across Europe.
