Mele introduces $70 PCG02U Ubuntu PC Stick


China based PC maker Mele has introduced a new PC Stick dubbed PCG02U running Ubuntu 14.04. It has an adjustable antenna on the side and 10/100 Ethernet Jack, to allow you to connect to wired networks.

The Mele PCG02U has the same specs as the first-gen Intel's Compute Stick. It is equipped with Intel Atom 3735F quad-core Bay Trail processor, 2GB RAM and 32GB storage. For connectivity, it includes USB 2.0, micro USB port, HDMI connector, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n and microSD card slot.

The Mele PCG02U is priced at $69.99 and is available for purchase from Aliexpress. The PC stick is lot cheaper than the first gen Intel Computer Stick. The company had also introduced PCG02 PC Stick running Windows 10.

Meizu PRO 5 Ubuntu Edition announced


China based Meizu has once again teamed up with Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu to launch their second Ubuntu smartphone - the Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition. Previously, both launched the Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition.

The specs of the Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition are identical to the Android powered counterpart, except for the OS. It runs Ubuntu Touch OS and comes with Scopes UI, which are categorised home screens that provide a unified view of content in the particular category. The company adds that Scopes are now more personalised and offers more interactive features.

The Meizu Pro 5 comes with 5.7-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display with 2.5D glass and Corning Gorilla Glass 3, powered by Exynos 7420 octa-core processor with Mali T760 GPU, 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage (expandable via microSD card). For photography there is 21.6MP rear camera (w/ dual tone LED flash, PDAF, Sony IMX230 Exmor RS sensor, 4K recording) and 5MP front snapper. Other features include Fingerprint sensor, Hybrid Dual SIM, 4G LTE and USB TypeC support. It is fueled by 3050mAh battery.

The Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition is the fifth Ubuntu device launched by Canonical and its partners in last twelve months. The pricing and availability details will be announced at MWC 2016.

BQ's Aquaris M10 is an Ubuntu tablet that can also be your PC


Spanish OEM BQ has partnered with Canonical, the company behind the open source Ubuntu OS to launch the Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition tablet. It is the first commercial Ubuntu-powered tablet, and is also the first to offer an Ubuntu convergent experience, meaning you can use the tablet like a PC.

With the Ubuntu convergent experience, you can switch the tablet to an Ubuntu PC when connected with a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, or when using the micro HDMI port to connect to an external monitor.

The BQ Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition features 10.1-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) IPS display and is powered by 1.5GHz quad-core MediaTek MT8163A processor with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage, which can be increased up to 64GB via microSD card.

It sports 8-megapixel rear camera with dual LED flash and 5-megapixel front camera. The rear camera can record 1080p videos as well. On the connectivity front, the tablet supports WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, micro HDMI and USB OTG. It is fueled by 7280mAh battery.

The tablet runs Ubuntu OS - the touch-friendly version of the operating system. Like the Ubuntu smartphones, the Aquaris M10 comes with  the "scopes" UI designed for touch screen interaction. There is also a feature called "side stage" that allows users to view two different applications on the same screen. 

The BQ Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition tablet will be available starting Q2 2016. The tablet will be available for order through BQ's online store and is expected to be priced around 250 Euros ($280 | Rs. 19,000).

BQ Aquaris E4.5, Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition launched in India



The first Ubuntu phones were launched earlier this year in Europe by Spanish manufacturer BQ. The Aquaris E4.5 went on sale in Europe back in February while the Aquaris E5 HD was introduced in June.

Now BQ has launched both the Aquaris E4.5 and Aquaris E5 HD for the Indian market. The brand has partnered with Snapdeal to sell these phones online in India. 

The phones run Ubuntu OS and comes with quick start screens called 'Scopes' that provide faster access to music, videos, social networks, etc. Users in India will get access to Scopes for Zomato, Star Plus, Zee TV, Eros Now, NDTV and Times of India. The phones also have smart gestures, for instance, swiping from left gives access to favorite apps and features, swiping down from top to view notifications and settings and swiping from bottom to display controls.

BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition features 4.5-inch qhd (960 x 540 pixels) display with Dragontrail glass protection and is equiped with 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processor paired with Mali 400 GPU and 1GB RAM. On-board storage is 8GB, further expandable via microSD. Camerawise it sports 8-megapixel rear camera with dual-LED flash, f/2.4 aperture and 1080p video recording capabilities. On the front there is a 5-megapixel shooter for clicking selfies. It is backed by 2150mAh battery.


BQ Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition sports 5-inch HD (1280 x 720 pixels) display with Dragontrail glass protection and is powered by 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processor with Mali 400 GPU, 1GB RAM and 16GB expandable storage (microSD card supported). It sports 13-megapixel rear camera with dual LED flash and f/2.2 aperture and 5-megapixel front shooter. A 2500mAh battery fuels the phone.

Both phones have dual SIM support and share the same connectivity suite- 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. They both come in Black and White colors.

BQ Aquaris E4.5 and E5 Ubuntu Editions are priced at Rs. 11,999 and Rs. 13,499 and will be available from Snapdeal by August end.

Ubuntu Intel Compute Stick goes on sale next week for $110


Earlier this year, Intel unveiled a small pocket sized PC in the form of dongle that can be connected to any TV or monitor via HDMI port to transform it into a full function PC.

Now, Canonical announced that the Intel Compute Stick with Ubuntu will go on sale next week priced at $110 in the U.S. It will be available from retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy and Newegg.com

The Ubuntu Compute Stick will be running 64-bit version of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS OS and will be powered by1.3GHz quad-core Intel Atom processor. further aided by 1GB RAM. Onboard storage is 8GB, there is a microSD card slot for additional storage. Other features include Intel HD graphics, Full-sized HDMI out, USB 2.0 port, Micro-USB port, Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi.

By comparison the Windows 8.1 model has 2GB RAM, 32GB storage and $150 price tag. , rest of the specs are the same. This is the first time that the Ubuntu version is up for sale.

Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition goes on sale in China for 1799 Yuan


Chinese smartphone maker Meizu has been teasing the Ubuntu-running edition of its MX4 smartphone for a while now. It was also showcased at a couple of events.

Now, the Meizu MX4 Ubuntu edition has gone for sale in China. This the second Ubuntu phone to be released commercially, the first one being BQ Aquarius e4.5 that went on sale in Europe earlier this year.

By comparison BQ's Ubuntu phone is a mid-range phone and costs ($195). It features 4.5-inch display, 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage, microSD slot, 8-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front camera. While, Meizu's Ubuntu phone offers high end specs.

Meizu MX4 Ubuntu edition features 5.36-inch (1920x1152 pixels) IPS display with 15:9 aspect ration and 2.6mm slim bezels on the side. Under the hood there is a 2.1GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6595 processor. It comes equipped with 20.7-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front facing camera. A 3100mAh battery fuels the device.

Ubuntu Phones comes with a new UI called 'Scopes' which will integrate various apps and services into an easy to use interface. For Meizu's Ubuntu phone, a number of Chinese scopes is available from the Ubuntu store including Baidu, Dianping, Weibo, Youku, Sohu and Chinese versions of the Today, Nearby and News aggregation scopes. Web apps are also available for Tmall, Taobao and QQ among others.

Meizu's MX4 Ubuntu edition is available to buy directly from the company's website in China. It is priced at 1799 Yuan ($290 | Rs. 19,000) and will be available in Silver and Golden colors. Meizu also announced that the MX4 Ubuntu edition will soon be sold across Europe.

Cube i7-CM is an Ubuntu Tablet with Intel Core M-5Y10 Processor


Chinese tablet manufacturer Cube launched its first tablet running Ubuntu Linux dubbed Cube i7 CM.

The Cube i7 CM features an 11.6-inch (1920x1080 pixels) IPS display with 10- point touch and is powered by Intel's 14nm Core M-5Y10C dual core processor with Intel HD 5300 graphics coupled with 4GB RAM. It comes with 64GB SSD which can be expanded up to 32GB via microSD card.

It sports 5-megapixel camera on the back and 2-megapixel camera on the front and includes Connectivity options like Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n +, Bluetooth 4.0.

Other features include micro HDMI port, 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD card slot, micro SIM card support, micro USB 3.0 port and stereo speakers. The Cube i7 CM is backed by 5000mAh battery, measures 299x180x9.5mm and weighs 840 grams.

It's worth noting that there is also a 128GB version of the tablet that runs an unlicensed version of Windows 8.1. Users will have to pay extra for the Windows license.

Cube will be selling 100 units of the Cube i7M tablet for $399 (Rs. 25,000) starting April 5 via AliExpress. After the said date the price is likely to move up to $532.

First Ubuntu Powered Phone BQ Aquaris E4.5 to Go On Sale On February 9


The world's first Ubuntu Phone - BQ Aquaris E4.5 will finally go on sale In Europe on February 9 in Europe. Canonical has partnered with mobile makers to launch the first Ubuntu powered device in Europe.

Ubuntu Phone will change the way we interact with our smartphone and apps. Rather than laying out all apps separately in grids with Android and iOS platform, The Ubuntu Phone will come with a new UI called 'Scopes' which will integrate various apps and services into an easy to use interface.

Coming to its specs, The BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition features a 4.5-inch display, 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage, microSD slot, 8-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front camera.

The BQ Aquaris E4.5 runs Ubuntu Touch and Ubuntu 15.04 and comes pre-loaded with apps like Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Yelp, Time Out, eBay and Cut the Rope. Additionallty there will be third party apps for Dropbox and Spotify.

The BQ Aquaris E4.5 will go on sale across Europe for €169.90 (Rs. 11,000 ; $194) via flash sale. The website where the sale will take place and exact time of sale will be revealed at @Ubuntu and @bqreaders on Twitter. You can also purchase the device with a SIM bundle from telecom operators like 3 Sweden, amena.com in Spain, giffgaff in the UK and Portugal Telecom.
