Samsung working on augmented reality and a new Gear VR headset


At Virtual Reality Summit in San Diego, Samsung VP Sung-Hoon Homg revealed company's plan for virtual reality. Hong said that the company is working on an Augmented Reality (AR) headset and a successor to its Gear VR mobile headset.

The AR headset will build upon Microsoft's HoloLens technology and Magic Leap. The company is also said to be working on a new light field engine that is capable of producing realistic holograms which will look really touchable.

Sung-Hoon also said that Samsung plans to unveil its AR technology at MWC 2017 in February, where the company will also launch its next 'S' series flagship, the Galaxy S8.

As for the successor to Gear VR headset, Sung-Hoon did not reveal any specific details, but said that it will be launched in a short time. The first edition of Gear VR headset was unveiled in 2015, and got a slight upgrade this year with better lenses, all-black plastic body to reduce glare and USB-C connetor support.
