Western Digital's USB-C G-Drive adds storage and can charge your laptop

Western Digital has announced new USB-C external hard drive with built in battery in its G-Drive series called 'G-Drive USB-C'. The company says the new drive is designed keeping "creative enthusiasts" in mind and features high-capacity storage with USB-C connectivity, which is also capable of charging USB Type-C devices simultaneously.

The G-Drive will be available in capacities of 4TB, 8TB and 10TB and features USB 3.1 Gen 1 interface with USB-C connector, that can provide up to 195MB/s in transfer speeds. It works with Apple's MacBook and MacBook Pro out of the box, but can also be reformatted for Windows PCs.

The device ships with a USB-C to USB-A cable to connect with traditional PCs with USB-A connector. It is compatible with computers featuring a ThunderboltTM 3, USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 interface.

Thanks to USB Power Delivery support, the G-Drive provides up to 45 watts of charging capability through the USB-C port to compatible devices like MacBook or MacBook Pro, or Windows 10 PCs with USB Type-C port without the need of a separate charger.

The G-Drive USB C is priced at $449.95 (10TB), $349.95 (8TB) and $195.95 (4TB) and comes with three year warranty. It will be available this quarter via g-technology.com or G-Technology resellers around the world.
