Qualcomm has no plans for Snapdragon 836
Rumors claimed that Qualcomm was working on an upgraded version of the existing top-tier Snapdragon 835 mobile processor called Snapdragon 836. The devices expected to utilize the chip were Xiaomi's upcoming bezel-less Mi MIX 2 and Google's Pixel 2 line up. However, Qualcomm China debunked the rumor and confirmed that Mi MIX 2 will be powered by Snapdragon 835 chip.
Now according a new report, Google's Pixel 2 Pixel 2 XL will not be powered by Snapdragon 836. Infact the report goes on saying that "there is not and there never will be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 836."
This means the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 will use Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform, the same chip that is used in most of the premium popular flagship devices including Samsung's Galaxy S8/S8+/, Xiaomi's Mi 6, OnePlus 5, HTC U11 and LG V30 to name a few.
Qualcomm in the past had introduced minor upgrade to its top-tier chips. For instance the Snapdragon 800 and Snapdragon 820 got minor upgrade in the form of Snapdragon 801 and Snapdragon 821 chip with a bump in the clock speed for improved performance. The SD821 chip was introduced in Q3 2016 and is used in a handful of popular devices like Google's Pixel and Pixel 2, LG G6 and OnePlus 3T. This could have led to the rumor of Snapdragon 836 chip.
