Sony to focus on Xperia X series till 2018, Xperia C, M series cancelled

Back in February, Sony confirmed that it has replaced its flagship Xperia 'Z' series smartphone with the Xperia 'X' series that was announced at MWC 2016. Now reports coming out from Asian tech media states that Sony has not only ended the 'Z' series, but apparently the mid-range Xperia C and Xperia M series as been cancelled as well.

The report also says that Sony will concentrate on the Xperia series, which will be the single brand for future smartphones till 2018.

A Sony Mobile presentation slide shows that the Xperia X series will mark Sony's Chapter 3, Chapter 1 was between 2010-2012 and was about "open OS for web communication" with the highlight being Xperia X10 series. Chapter 2 was about "best of Sony" highlighted by Xperia Z series, which took place between 2013-2015.

Chapter 3 marks "Xperia for new communication" with the focus on Xperia X series and will take place between 2016-2018. Xperia X will be the new visual identity for Sony's brand communication, and the 'X' logo will be used for promotion and advertisements.

This does not come as surprise because Sony had earlier said that the Xperia X series represents a new chapter and evolution of the company's product strategy.  If rumors are true than the upcoming Xperia C6 Ultra could launch as Xperia X Ultra.
