BlackBerry DTEK50 $299 "world's most secure Android smartphone" goes official

BlackBerry has officially taken the wraps of its second Android smartphone dubbed DTEK50, which it claims to be the world's most secure smartphone as it offers full disk encryption (both personal and business data), secure boot process and monthly delivery of security patches.

The DTEK 50 is a rebranded Alcatel Idol 4s, and sits in the mid-range tier. Unlike Priv that came with physical keyboard, the DTEK50 sports only a full touchscreen display.

The BlackBerry DTEK50 comes with 5.2-inch Full HD display and is powered by Snapdragon 617 processor further aided by Adreno 405 GPU and 3GB RAM. On-board storage is 16GB, which can be further expanded via microSD card. For photography, it sports 13-megapixel rear camera and 8-megapixel front camera. It runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow and is fueled by 2610mAh battery with support for fast charging. Connectivity duties are handled by 4G LTE, WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS and NFC.

The DTEK50 comes pre-loaded with BlackBerry Hub and DTEK. The software is similar to the one offered by Priv offering users control over which apps get access to personal info or device features such as microphone or camera.

Priced at $299 (Rs. 20,500), the BlackBerry DTEK50 is up for pre-order in the U.S, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Netherlands via ShopBlackBerry.com. Those who pre-book the phone before August 8 will get a free BlackBerry mobile power pack. Availability in other global market will be announced in the coming weeks.
