Google Pixel, Pixel XL goes official


Google at its event in San Francisco has just announced the new Pixel smartphones, which replaces the iconic Nexus brand. Dubbed Google Pixel and Pixel XL, they carry the 'G' branding and flaunts aluminum unibody and glass design.

The new Pixel and Pixel XL are the first phones to ship with Android 7.1 Nougat and Google Assistant (baked into the software). They include a new software installation process, wherein the updates are downloaded and installed in the background.

They are also the first Daydream ready phones with sensors and displays all tuned for amazing VR. The phones also comes pre-loaded with Google's video calling app and Allo messaging app, and offers  unlimited storage for photos and videos with Google Photos.

Coming to the specs, the Google Pixel comes with 5-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection and is powered by 2.15GHz quad-core Snapdragon 821 processor backed by Adreno 530 GPU and 4GB RAM. It comes in two storage options: 32GB/ 128GB.

For photography, it gets 12.3-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, 1.55um pixel, f/2.0 aperture and PDAF. For selfies and video calling there's 8-megapixel front camera. The camera boasts features such as It offers HDR+, multiple short exposure, extended HDR range, Zero Shutter Lag, and Faster Shutter Speed. The Pixel phone's camera gets a DXOMark rating of 89, beating Apple's new iPhone 7, which scored 86.

Connectivity duties are handled by 4G VoLTE, WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS and USB Type-C. There a fingerint scanner on the back and a 2770mAh battery keeps the lights on and supports Qualcomm's Quick Charging technology.

The Pixel XL on the other hand sports a bigger 5.5-inch AMOLED display and is backed by a beefier 3450mAh battery. The rest of the specs are similar to its smaller sibling Pixel.

The Google Pixel and Pixel XL prices start at $649 (Rs. 43,000) and goes up to $869 (Rs. 58,000). It comes in Quite Black, Very Silver and a limited edition Really Blue hues, and will be available for pre-order in the U.S, Australia, Canada and Germany starting today. It will be available for pre-order in India on Flipkart, Reliance Digital and Croma starting October 13.
