Samsung unpacks the Galaxy Note5
At the Galaxy Unpacked 2015 event in New York, Samsung unveiled its next generation Note, the Galaxy Note5.
Samsung Galaxy Note5 gets a major design overhaul with a Galaxy S6 like curved glass rear panel. It also features a new and improved S pen. Now, you can write with the S Pen without unlocking the phone. There is also a new add apps shortcut to Air command. The new Scroll Capture feature offers annotation and screen/ text capturing abilities. It sits flush with the bottom of the phone and can be clicked open like you would click a ball point pen.
The fingerprint sensor is integrated into the home button and now supports Samsung Pay, a service that lets you make payments over NFC or MST, just like the Apple Pay. It will launch in the U.S in September.
As for specs, Samsung Galaxy Note5 features the usual 5.7-inch QHD (1440x2560 pixels) Super AMOLED display as its predecessor with a pixel density of 515ppi. Inside there is 64-bit octa-core Exynos 7420 processor 64-bit octa-core Exynos 7420 SoC with four Cortex-A57 cores clocked at 2.1GHz, and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5GHz, paired with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. The Note5 comes in 32GB or 64GB storage options and gives a miss to the microSD card slot. It runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with TouchWiz on top.
For imaging, there is a 16-megapixel rear camera with f/1.9 aperture, OIS, phase detection, 4K video recording and brings auto real-time HDR option. On the front there is a 5-megapixel shooter with aperture f/1.9 for taking selfies and for video calls. The camera app can be opened with a double press on the home button, which also features the fingerprint sensor.
In terms of connectivity, the Galaxy Note5 supports 4G LTE Cat. 9 or Cat. 6 modems depending on the market. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, NFC, MST GPS/ A-GPS, and Micro-USB 2.0. Fuelling the Note5 is a 3000mAh battery and there is support for both Qi and Powermat wireless charging.
