Alcatel will "Light Up" MWC on February 27

Recently it was reported that Alcatel will launch five smartphones including a modular at MWC 2017 in Barcelona next month. The company has now sent out invites for its MWC press event scheduled for February 27.

The invite shared by Alcatel has the tagline "Light Up" accompanied by a handset that has colorful LED dotted back panel.  Reports suggest that the LEDs in the panel will change its pattern with the flow of music, similar to JBL's pulse speaker.

Since the invite shows the device only with LED back panel, it's unclear if the device is modular, or whether the LED back panel will be the only characteristic of the device. But recent reports have suggested that the device will have a modular design similar to Moto Z family, and come with swappable back cases.

The device is rumored to be the Idol 5, and the only specifications known about the device is that it will have MediaTek chipset and 13MP rear camera.

If the device is modular, Alcatel will be the third smartphone brand to use this design after LG and Motorola. LG has failed with its attempt on modular phone with the G5 while, Lenovo-owned Motorola has tasted some success and praised for its modular design. It will be interesting to see what's in store for Alcatel's modularity.
