Possible specs of Sony's first bezel-less phone leaked

While most of the smartphone brands have launched their version of bezel-less smartphones, Sony is yet to utilize the technology. The company has been using what it calls 'OmniBalance' design with thick bezels ever since the launch of Xperia Z five years ago.

Having said that, Sony has already confirmed that it plans to completely redesign its next smartphone hinting at a bezel-less form factor. And now details about this device has hit the interweb.

A screenshot showing the specs of the phone carrying model number H8541 surfaced in China. The Sony H8541 appears to be the company's 2018 flagship offering and successor of Xperia XZ Premium because it sports 5.7-inch display bearing 4K HDR resolution and is protected by Gorilla Glass 5.

To recap, the Xperia XZ Premium 5.5-inch display and its dimensions were 156 x 77 x 7.99. However, even with a bigger 5.7 display, the Sony H8541 has a footprint of 149 x 74 x 7.5mm, making it slimmer and smaller than Xperia XZ Premium. This could only mean that the H8541 will have slim bezels, and the 5.7-inch screen will get 18:9 aspect ratio.

As for the other specification, according to the source, Sony's next flagship will ship with Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage and 3420mAh battery. It will run Android Oreo out-of-the box and also includes Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB Type-C and IP68 water and dust resistance. Sadly, the camera details are not known yet.

Do note that, there's no way to confirm the authenticity of the screenshot, so take this report with a pinch of salt. If the phone does exist, it is most likely to break cover at MWC 2018.

Samsung’s graphene batteries could charge your phone in 12 minutes

Lithium-ion batteries are widely applied to markets for mobile devices and electric vehicles since 1991. However these type of batteries requires charging time of at least an hour to fully charge, even with quick charging technology. Also they have reached their limit for capacity expansion. Having said that, it appears that Samsung is working on a new solution.

A team of researchers at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) developed a 'graphene ball' battery material that enables a 45 percent increase in capacity and five time charging speed than lithium-ion batteries.

In theory, a battery based on 'graphene ball' material requires only 12 minute to fully charge, and can maintain high stability even at 60 degree celsius temperature. This battery material promises for the second generation battery market related to mobile devices and electric vehicles.

SAIT also sought for an approach to apply graphene to batteries and discovered a mechanism to mass synthesize graphene into a 3D form like popcorn using affordable silica (SiO2). This graphene ball was utilized for both the anode protective layer and cathode material in lithium-ion batteries, which ensured an increase of charging capacity, and decrease of charging time as well as stable temperatures.

In its research, SAIT collaborated closely with Samsung SDI as well as a team from Seoul National University’s School of Chemical and Biological Engineering. SAIT has also filed two applications for the “graphene ball” technology patent in the US and Korea.

Alleged Meizu M6s leaks in live photos, features side-mounted fingerprint scanner

Meizu launched a phone called Pro 7 featuring two displays earlier this year. The concept was not new but something different, when compared to the trending bezel-less phone. While most of Meizu's Chinese counterparts have come out with bezel-less phones, the company is yet to launch one.

However now it appears that the brand is ready to release a bezel-less phone. A leaked image of Meizu's upcoming smartphone allegedly called M6s has hit the interweb.

As you can see in the photo, the Meizu M6s has slim bezels on the sides and top and bottom, than a regular smartphone. And going by the trend this means the phone will have a large screen with 18:9 aspect ratio. As a result Meizu will be ditching mTouch home button/fingerprint sensor on the front.

Interestingly, Meizu is not placing the fingerprint scanner at the back. Instead the sensor will be housed in a dedicated physical button on the side frame, like Sony phones. However, the button dosen't double as a power button because there's a dedicated power button too, above the fingerprint sensor. A similar kind of setup is also found on Vernee Mars.

The Meizu M6s will be a budget phone similar to its sibling M6 and M6 Note, and is rumored to come with features like 5.7-inch Full HD+ display, MediaTek MT6793 processor, 3GB/4GB RAM, 32GB/64GB internal storage, 13MP/5MP rear and front cameras. It is expected to ship with Android Nougat based FlymeOS.

According to reports, the Meizu M6s will be unveiled at an event in China on December 20.

WhatsApp for iOS gets YouTube PiP and more easier way to send long voice message

WhatsApp has`updated its app for the iOS platform adding two new features. The latest update bring YouTube PiP mode for watching a video without leaving WhatsApp, and more convenient way to record long audio messages.

Now when you receive a link to a YouTube video, you can play it right within the the app, without having to leave it, thanks to Picture-in-Picture mode. So you'll now be able to watch the YouTube video as well as navigate to another chat at the same time.

Next, WhatsApp's voice message function is getting refreshed. Earlier you had to hold the mic icon to record a voice message be it long or short. In cases where users wanted to record a long voice message, holding the icon was tiresome. But now you'll be able to record voice message without the need to hold the record button.

Now when you start recording an audio message by holding down the mic button, a padlock UI element will appear on the right side of the chat window. Sliding it up will lock the recording, and you can go hands free. Once you are done recording the audio message, taping on the send button ends the session, and the audio clip will be sent to the recipient. Note that during the voice recording session, you'll be able to scroll up and down the chat window, but not be able to leave it.

The two new features are part of WhatsApp v2.17.81 for iOS, and it is available for download from the App Store.
