Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 616 octa-core 64-bit SoC with LTE

Qualcomm's 615  SoC was the world's first octa-core chipset with integrated LTE and 64-bit capabilities. Now as a part of an upgrade the company has announced the Snapdragon 616.

Snapdragon 616 has the same 64-bit processing with quad-core ARM Cortex A53 + quad-core ARM Cortex A53 arrangement, but the second set of Cortex A53 cores are clocked at 1.2GHz per core. It has an integrated X5 LTE Global Mode modem and the same Adreno 405 GPU present in Snapdragon 615 chip. It houses LPDDR3 800MHz Single-channel 32-bit (6.4GBps) and eMMC 4.51 SD 3.0 (UHS-I)

Snapdragon 616 supports LTE Broadcast and LTE multimode dual SIM, QHD (2560 x 1600 pixels) display, up to 21MP camera, 1080p video playback at 60fps, Mircast support for wireless streaming of multimedia content, 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MU-MIMO, Bluetooth 4.0 and Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 technology.

The first device to be powered by Snapdragon 616 is the Huawei Maimang 4. However, Qualcomm has not revealed when the chip will become available. Qualcomm also announced the Snapdragon 212 and 412 processors with LTE recently.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 and Snapdragon 412 SoCs announced


Qualcomm, which makes software and chips used in smartphones and tablets has launched two new processors, the Snapdragon 212 and Snapdragon 412. The new processor are aimed at adding more capability to low-end smartphone.

The Snapdragon 212  features ARM Cortex A7 quad-core SoC clocked up to 1.3GHz and has Adreno 304 GPU. The low end-processor also supports 1080p video playback with H.265 (HEVC), Display up to 720p, LPDDR2/LPDDR3 at 533MHz, eMMC 4.5 SD 3.0 (UHS-I), up to 8MP camera support, 1080p Full HD video recording, Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.1 + BLE, NFC, GPS, Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 and LTE multimode Dual SIM support with Dual Standby

The Snapdragon 412 SoC features Cortex A53 quad-core chipset clocked at up to 1.4GHz. The 64-bit capable SoC has Adreno 306 GPU for graphics and performance improvements. It supporrts 1080p video playback, Display up to WUXGA (1920×1200), 720p external display; LPDDR2/3 600MHz Single-channel 32-bit (4.8 GBps) non-POP, eMMC 4.51 SD 3.0 (UHS-I), LTE multimode multi-SIM (TSTS, DSDA and DSDS), up to 13.5MP camera support, Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.1 + BLE and Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0. It comes integrated with X5 LTE modem and supports up to Cat 4 speeds (150 Mbps). 

Qualcomm did not reveal  the availability details of these processors for OEMs.

MediaTek's new Helio X20 SoC packs 10 cores, three CPU clusters


MediaTek announced the launch of Helio X20 SoC for smartphone and tablet. The company claims that it is the world's first processor with 10 processing cores (Deca-core) and tri-cluster CPU design.

For the very first time we are seeing such an architecture on a chipset.The Helio X20 consists of three processor cluster, each designed to handle different types of work loads. It consists of one cluster of two ARM Cortex-A72 cores (clocked at 2.4GHz for exterme performance) and two cluster of four ARM Cortex-A53 cores (one clocked at 2GHZ for medium loads and the other 1.4GHz for light activities). 

The company says that dividing the cores into three clusters provides more efficient allocation of tasks for smoother performance and extended battery life. "Innovative three cluster architecture sets new performance and power efficiency benchmarks with up to a 30% reduction in power consumption for the next generation of mobile device"


The Helio X20 is most likely to comes with Mali T800 series GPU and for memory chip it comes with two LPDDR3 Memory running at 933MHz. It features support for smartphone and tablet displays with 120Hz refresh rate. It also supports 32-megapixel single camera with 24fps and 25-megapixel camera with 30fps. 

The processor packs 3D depth engine built into the hardware and includes new de-noise and demosaic hardware for improved image quality, color accuracy and sharpness under extreme conditions. There is also support for 10-bit color depth and both HEVC, VP9 HW decoding.

It also features an integrated lower power ARM Cortex-M4 processor to support always-on applications such as MP3 playback and voice activation. The sensor hub operates on a lower power domain for better battery efficiency.

The Helio X20 processor will begin sampling Q3, this year and can be expected to be available in consumer products by end of this year.
