Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer has officially announced its second generation Connected smartwatch, the Connected Modular 45. The watch maker says it is the first luxury connected watch bearing the Swiss Made label (designed, developed and assembled in Switzerland by TAG Heuer), and was made in partnership with Intel and Google. As the name suggests, the Connected Modular 45 has a modular design, that lets the wearer to swap the connected module with an Haute Horlogerie mechanical module ― 3 hands caliber 5 or Chronograph Tourbillon. The watch will also be available in a wide range of materials, color and combinations. Beside the two swappable modules, the watch will also have interchangeable lugs, strap and buckle.
TAG Heuer says the modularity options add up to a 56 different design (a selection of 11 standard models are systematically offered in store + 45 others on request). Some of the options include rubber straps (black, blue, red, white, yellow, green, orange, and electric blue), calfskin/rubber combo straps (black, grey, and light brown), ceramic straps, and titanium bracelets. The lugs will come in titanium, titanium with diamonds, titanium with 18K rose gold, and titanium with a matte black ceramic finish (with or without diamonds). Buckles will be available in PVD or titanium.
The modularity also extends to the watch's software with dual customization,offering 30 watch dials, inspired by historical pieces. ― "Colored white, black, light grey, anthracite grey, chocolate brown, navy blue or gold, with sunray finish, skeleton dial, 3 hands, GMT, a chronograph with 1, 2, or 3 counters, plus a date and day window, these dials are interchangeable with a single swipe of the finger." There's also a app called TAG Heuer Studio dial configuration, which lets you create your own dial. As for the specs, the Connected Modular 45 operates on Android Wear 2.0 and is powered by Intel Atom Z34xx series processor. It sports 1.39-inch AMOLED touch display with a layer of scratch-resistant sapphire cover glass. The watch is water resistant for up to 50 meters, and is equipped with 512MB RAM, 4GB storage, microphone, WiFi and Bluetooth. It also has GPS for tracking journeys and sporting performance, NFC for payment and Android Pay support. A 410mAh battery keeps the lights on, which promises 25 hours of run time. The TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 starts at $1,650 (Rs. 1,08,000) and will roll out to US, UK, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, Malaysia and Singapore. It will be available starting today via TAG Heuer boutiques, from a selection of retailers, or the brand's online webstore. There's also a Deluxe Box set including a connected watch (in grade 5 titanium with titanium lugs and brown natural leather strap), complete with the prestigious Heuer-02T Tourbillion mechanical module, plus an additional black rubber strap. It will carry a price tag of $17,000 (Rs. 11,20,000). TAG Heuer says that the connected and mechanical modules are backed by two year warranty, while the accessories (strap, buckle, lugs, charger) are covered by a one-year warranty. In January 2017, TAG Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver said that the company will release a new Android Wear 2.0 smartwatch in May 2017. Now it appears that the new smartwatch will arrive sooner than expected. Android Central, citing people familiar with the matter, says that TAG Heuer's upcoming smartwatch will be called TAG Connected Modular and will arrive March 14, 2017. As the name suggests it will be a modular smartwatch. The source suggests that the TAG Connected Modular will "have a unique set of features that make it a true one-of-a-kind Wear 2.0 smart watch". It will sport fully customizable lugs with swappable straps and clasps. The smartwatch will also have a custom automatic watch head, that will allow the wearer to switch between the digital connected Android Wear 2.0 face and traditional analog clock movement. The report does not reveal any details on the specification, however TAG Heuer CEO, back in January revealed that the company's upcoming watch will be made available in two sizes (for men and a smaller version for women) in different colors, pack better hardware, feature improved display, Intel processor, NFC (for payment function), more accurate GPS and longer battery life. Swiss watch manufacturer TAG Heuer has launched its first smartwatch called the Connected , a luxury Android Wear smartwatch. The wearable’s
design is inspired by the TAG Heuer Carrera watch and uses premium materials, including titanium lugs and a scratch resistant sapphire crystal screen.
TAG Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver said his company has been
building mechanical watches for 155 years but knew little about building
an Internet-connected device that younger buyers would want. So it
partnered with Intel and Google in what he calls the "marriage of Watch
Valley and Silicon Valley."
The TAG Heuer Connected has a round dial and features custom watch faces. It has a 1.5-inch fully circular transflective LTPS LCD display with a layer of scratch-resistant Sapphire crystal. It is equipped with 1.6Ghz dual-core Intel processor aide by 1GB RAM. On-board storage is 4GB and fueling the device is a 410mAh battery. For wireless connectivity there is Bluetooth and WiFi. Other features include gyroscope, tilt
detection sensor, a microphone, a haptic engine, directional wind and
weather monitoring, and IP67 water and dust resistance.
The smartwatch can be personalized with six
different rubber straps. It also has a set of digital watch faces with
classic TAG Heuer dials. Users can personalize the
information they want to see on the watch including weather, step count,
or calories. They can also check messages, get fitness update and other information.
"The TAG Heuer Connected includes a beautiful set of digital watch faces with classic TAG Heuer dials," said David Singleton, VP of Engineering, Android Wear, in a blog post. "You’ll be able to personalize what information you want to see: weather, step count, or calories."
It sports a premium titanium alloy body and, sandblasted, carbide-coated titanium bezel with anti-fingerprint coating. It has a titanium single push-button with
black, carbide-coated line fine-brushed and raised with TAG Heuer
shield. The smartwatch is 46mm
wide and 12.8mm thick, and is compatible with devices running Android
4.3 or higher, and iOS 8.2+.
The TAG Heuer Connected is priced at $1500 (Rs. 1 lakhs) and is available to buy in the U.S via company website- tagheuerconnected. It will go on sale in Japan next week, followed by countries in Europe and Asia by the end of November. It comes in a standard black rubber
strap, but will also be available in six colors including blue, red,
green, orange, white and yellow, which are sold separately.
The smartwatch comes with a two-year warranty and as per TAG Heuer, after two
years, users will be able to pay an extra $1,500 and trade-in their
Connected smartwatch for the mechanical Carerra watch, which is priced
at $3,000.
