Samsung's ultra high speed 128GB UFS 2.0 memory promises faster smartphones

Samsung has announced that it has started mass-production of  world's first 128GB ultra-fast embedded flash memory. The memory is based on UFS 2.0 (Universal Flash Storage) and is 2.7 times faster than eMMC 5.0 found in todays's smartphones.

UFS memory utilizes Comman Queue technology, that accelerates the speed of command execution in SSD through a serial interface significantly increasing data processing speeds compared to the 8-bit parallel-interface-based eMMC standard. With 19,000 input/output operations per second), it offers better write and read performance and 50 percent decrease in energy consumption.

"With our mass production of ultra-fast UFS memory of the industry's highest capacity, we are making a significant contribution to enable a more advanced mobile experience for consumers. In the future, we will increase the proportion of high-capacity memory solutions, in leading the continued growth of the premium memory market," Jee-ho Baek, senior vice president of memory marketing at Samsung, said in a statement.

The UFS 2.0 memory is available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB and is aimed at high-end smartphones. The current eMMC will continue to exist for mid-market value segments.

With increased speed and reduced power consumptions on UFS 2.0, we will see development of faster phones at the high-end market segment with battery life better with what can currently be acheived.

Samsung also says that the ultra-fast UFS embedded memory package is a new ePoP (embedded package on package) solution that can be stacked directly on top of a logic chip, taking approximately 50 percent less space.

There are no words on which device will get it but its possible that the 128GB UFS 2.0 flash storage will appear in Galaxy S6.
