Android One debuts in the U.S with Moto X4

The rumors are official. Google and Motorola has launched the Moto X4 Android One edition in in the U.S exclusively for Project Fi. This is the first Android One phone to launch in the U.S and first non-Google device to support Project Fi. The launch comes soon after Xiaomi released its first Android One device the Mi A1 in India. The Moto X4 will also make its way to India on October 3.

The Moto X4 Android One Edition is basically the regular Moto X4, but ships with stock Android Nougat without Moto enhancements, and Motorola promises to release Android Oreo update before the end of the year, along with timely security updates. It also will be among the first to get Android P upgrade as well. The device is also optimised for Google Assistant and comes pre-loaded with Google Duo and unlimited high-quality photo storage with Google Photos.

As for the specs, nothing has changed, the MotoX4 Android One Edition features 5.2-inch Full HD AMOLED display, and is powered by 2.0GHz octa-core Snapdragon 630 processor accompanied by Adreno 508 GPU, 3GB RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. It has dual 12MP+8MP dual-camera at the back and 16MP front camera with low light photography, and is fueled by 3000mAh battery. Other specs include 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB Type-C, fingerprint scanner, IP68 water and dust resistance and TurboCharging.

The Moto X4 Android One Edition has been priced at $399 (Rs. 26,000) in the U.S is now up for pre-order in Super Black and Sterling Blue color. There's also a trade-in program which lets Nexus device users to exchange the device for up to $165. Those who opt for the exchange by October 5 will get an extra $50 Fi credit.

General Mobile GM 6 Android One smartphone with Nougat, fingerprint sensor announced

Turkey based General Mobile has introduced, the GM 6, the company's latest Android One smartphone, in partnership with Google at MWC 2017 in Barcelona. It is the successor of GM 5, and gets major upgrades in the processing department, selfie camera, a bigger battery, as well as double RAM and Storage, than its predecessor.

Nothing has changed in terms of design, and the GM 6 sports rubbery plastic rear panel and metal frame. It runs Android Nougat and is the first Android One smartphone to boast fingerprint sensor, which is embedded into the home button.

The GM 6 features 5-inch HD IPS 2.5D curved glass display with Gorilla Glass 4 protection and is powered by 1.5GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6737T processor backed by Mali-T720 GPU and 3GB RAM. On-board storage is 32GB, which can be expanded via microSD card.

For photography, there's 13MP rear camera with dual LED flash and 1080p video recording, and the selfie shooter is a 8MP unit assisted by LED flash. Connectivity options include dual-SIM slots, 4G LTE, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 and GPS. A 3000mAh battery gives the phone juice to run.

The General Mobile GM 6 comes in Space Grey, Gold and Rose Gold color. Pricing and availability details are yet to be announced, however, General Mobile says it plans to sell the GM 6 in 45 countries. Previously the company sold Android One device in almost 20 markets.

Speaking of Android One, for those uninitiated, its an initiative, Google announced back in 2014, to bring affordable Android smartphones to emerging markets. The Android One initiative was initially launched in India, and has expanded to more than 30 counties ever since. Google is also expected to launch Android One smartphones in the U.S soon.

General Mobile GM 5 is the first Nougat-powered Android One smartphone

Turkey based smartphone maker General Mobile has added a new member to Google's Android One line-up. Dubbed GM 5, it is the first Android One smartphone to ship with Android 7.0 Nougat. Apart from the new OS, the rest of the spec sheet is similar to General Mobile 4G, that was launched last year.

The GM5 has 5-inch HD (1280 x 720 pixels) IPS display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection and is powered by 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor paired with Adreno 306 GPU, 2GB RAM and 16GB inbuilt storage, which can be further increased via microSD card.

For photography, there's 13MP rear camera with dual-LED flash and 5MP front camera. In terms of connectivity, the phone supports dual-SIMs, 4G LTE, 3G, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. It is backed by 2500mAh battery.

The General Mobile GM5 will be available in single and dual-SIM versions in Black, Space Grey and Gold colors. It will be available in 20 countries via authorized sale points or carrier stores in Azerbaijan, Albania, Afghanistan, Belgium, Bosnia, Croatia, Cyprus, Georgia, Ghana, Greece, Iraq, Kenya, Luxembourg, Moldova, Netherlands, Pakistan, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey and Uzbekistan. Unfortunately, the pricing is not known just yet.

Android One phones start getting Android 7.0 Nougat

Last month, Google rolled out Android 7.0 Nougat to Nexus devices and Pixel C tablet. Now Google's affordable Android One devices have started getting the Nougat update starting with Cherry Mobile G1 in Philippines.

The Android Nougat update for Cherry Mobile G1 is being rolled out OTA and the download package size if about 750MB. The update brings easier multitasking with multi-windows, notification enhancements, new emoji, improved battery life, direct boot and more. It also includes Android security patch for August 2016 as well.

Other Android One devices worldwide including India are also expected to get the Nougat update soon.

Sundar Pichai to reportedly launch refreshed Android One range on December 16

Google CEO Sundar Pichai will be be visiting India later this month for the first time after taking over as the head of the company. Reports suggests that Pichai will be meeting PM Narendra Modi and President Pranab Mukharjee. In addition Google has also sent put invites for a press event on December 16, which suggests that Pichai might be launching refreshed Android One range in India.

The invite talks about affordable phones that lets new users access to the internet. 
"At Google, we believe that technology can change people's lives for the better. Indians are coming online at an astonishing rate with affordable smartphones. These new users have a completely fresh view on what the Internet has to offer. Please block your date for an event with Google as we outline our vision for these users," the invite reads.

Earlier there were reports about Google's plan to reboot the Android One initiative in India. It search giant plans to launch a sub-Rs. 3000 Android One smartphone in collaboration with Lava in India very soon. With the reboot, Google will also do away with its strict hardware requirements, which made it difficult for smartphone manufacturer to differentiate their device. This could result in more
Android One devices from various manufacturers at different price points.

Pichai previously visited India in September 2014 for the global launch of Google's ammbitious Android One initiative to make the pure Android experience available on affordable devices. Micromax Canvas A1, Karbonn Sparkle V and Spice Dream UNO were the first Android One devices made available for the Indian market.

Google reboots Android One program to boost Indian sales, new low-cost Lava-made smartphone coming soon

Google announced the Android One program back in September last year, and partnered with Indian manufacturers- Micromax, Karbonn and Spice to out the first Android One devices- Micromax Canvas A1, Karbonn Sparkle V and Spice Dream UNO Mi-498. 

Ever since the launch in India, the initiative has expanded to more than 19 countries. The initiative never did well and the blame was on Google due to its strict rules about the choice of hardware and limited manufacturing options. The first attempt can be called a failure with just 1.2 million units being sold in India in the first year of its launch which makes it 3.5% of the total market share.

However,  it seems that Google isn't giving up on the Android One initiative. According to a published report on WSJ, Google will be giving Android One, another shot in the country and has already started working with Lava international for a new sub-Rs. 3,000 smartphone which will launch in the next few months.

With the reboot, Google will do away with its strict hardware requairements, which made it difficult for smartphone manufacturer to differentiate their device. This time Android One Partners will have more options in each component aso allowing them to buy their own parts from vendors and will also give them freedom to decide how much they cost

With Google's new approach we can expect Android One devices with not just the OS updates to look forward to, but also the specifications.

Android One handsets start receiving Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Google started rolling out Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for Nexus devices and now its time for the Android One devices.

As per reports Android One devices are getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow OTA update in India. The Android One devices that are receiving the update include Micromax Canvas A1, Spice Dream UNO Mi-498 and Karbonn Sparkle V. Unfortunately there are no details about the update for Lava Pixel V1 and about Android One handsets of other markets.

The update size is 338.1 for all Android One smartphones which share the same ROM. The update is said to bring the device to build number MRA58M. 

Android 6.0 Marshmallow concentrates on six major things- App permission, Web experience, App Links, Mobile Payment, Fingerprint support and Power & Charging. There will also be native support for USB Type-C. To know the new features in detail click here.

Android One smartphones are entry-level phones loaded with Stock Android with just enough features to create value for emerging markets. The hardware is built by smartphone manufacturer using designs and standards provided by Google, which in turn does the marketing of these devices. Google's Android One lands in UAE, Infinix Hot 2 launched

Google is continuing to expand it Android One Initiative and the latest country to join the gang is U.A.E. The search giant has partnered with hardware manufacturer Infinix to launch Inifinix Hot 2.  This is the same phone that came to Africa last month.

Infinix Hot 2  features 5-inch HD (1280 x 720 pixels) IPS display and is powered by 1.2GHz quad-core MediaTek processor paired with either 1GB. On-board storage is 16GB, further expandable via microSD card up to 32GB. It runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, has dual SIM slots and supports 3G HSPA+, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. There is 8-megapixel rear camera with BSI sensor and LED flash. On the front there is 2-megapixel shooter. It is fueled by 2200mAh battery.

The Infinix Hot 2 is priced at AED 299 ($80 | Rs. 5,500) and is available exclusively on Souq.com.

Google's Android One initiative has now made its way to the European market with the launch of Aquaris A4.5. The phone is manufactured by Spanish phone maker, BQ, known for making Ubuntu OS-based phones. The BQ Aquaris A4.5 will be available in Spain and Portugal, where it is priced EUR 169.9 and EUR 179.9 respectively.

BQ Aquaris A4.5 features 4.5-inch qHD (960 x 540 pixels) IPS display with Dragontrail glass coating and is powered by 1GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735M processor with Mali T720 GPU, 1GB RAM and 16GB storage. There is microSD card slot for storage expansion up to 64GB and Dual-SIM slot. It runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box and the audio is powered by Dolby Sound system.

For imaging, it sports 8-megapixel rear camera with dual LED flash, f/2.0 aperture and 5P lenses. On the front there is 5-megapixel selfie camera. Google is introducing its Android One program to Africa. It has partner with hardware manufacturer Infinix to launch the Infinix Hot 2 in 6 African countries: Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya and Morocco.

Infinix Hot 2  features 5-inch HD (1280 x 720 pixels) IPS display and is powered by 1.2GHz quad-core MediaTek processor paired with either 1GB or 2GB RAM (two RAM models). On-board storage is 16GB, further expandable via microSD card up to 32GB. It runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, has dual SIM slots and supports 3G HSPA+, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. For imaging, it sports 8-megapixel rear camera with BSI sensor and LED flash. On the front there is 2-megapixel shooter. It is fueled  h 2200mAh battery and comes in White, Black, Red and Blue colors.

Infinix Hot 2 is priced at N17,500 ($87 | Rs. 5,750) for the 1GB model and costs N19,500 ($100 | Rs. 6,400) for the 2GB RAM model (Gold color) in Nigeria which is available via select retail outlets and online retailer Jumia. It's also available from Jumia in Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya and Morocco.

With Android One devices Google's aim is to push lower priced phones to less developed parts of the world where computers are considered luxury. 

It was launched in India last year and since then has reached several Asian countries such as  India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Philippines, Turkey, Myanmar and Pakistan. Google recently launched the Lava Pixel V1 and Cherry Mobile One G1, that is part of the second wave of Android One Program with improved specs.

Last month Google launched the second generation of Android One smartphone in India dubbed Lava Pixel V1. The latest Android One Phone was a major improvement over the first gen. 

Now the Second Gen Android One phone has reached PhPhilippines with the launch of 'Cherry Mobile G1'. The handset offers decent specs while maintaining its budget friendly price tag. This is Cherry Mobile's second Android One device. The Android One initiative was launched in Philippines in February this year. Cherry Mobile was Google's OEM partner.

Just like other Android One devices, the G1 will also get OS updates straight from Google for 2 years.

Cherry Mobile G1 is priced at Php 5,999 ($128) in the Phillippines. It will be available in two weeks at select Cherry Mobile stores and kiosks.

Google's Android One Program reaches Thailand with the i-mobile IQ II

Google is continuing to expand it Android One Program and the latest country to join the initiative is Thailand, becoming the tenth country overall to get Android One phones. Google is partnering with i-mobile to launch the i-mobile IQ II smartphone. The i-mobile IQ II is priced at 444 THB (US$ 125 | Rs. 8,000) and is available both online, and at select retail locations across Thailand.

i-mobile IQ II comes with 5-inch 720p HD IPS display and is powered by 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 64-bit processor with Adreno 306 GPU, 1GB RAM and 16GB on-board storage (microSD card support up to 32GB). It runs Android 5.0 Lollipop, has dual-SIM slot and supports 4G LTE, 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n on the connectivity front. Camerawise, it sports 8-megapixel rear camera with BSI sensor and LED flash and 2-megapixel front shooter. It is fueled by 2500mAh battery and comes in White or Black flavors.

Lava likely to launch second gen Android One phone on July 27

Earlier this month ET reported that Google is planning to introduce second gen of Android One smartphones. For this Google is partnering with Lava International.

Now, Lava has sent out invites for an event on July 27, where the brand is likely to launch the second gen Android One handset. The caption in the invite reads Witness the Power of the one that will never grow old, will respect your privacy, will keep you powered longer and will help you create memories

ET also reported that Lava's Android One phone will feature 5-inch display, MediaTek SoC and 2GB RAM. A Lava handset dubbed Iris X5 4G with same specs appeared on GFXbench, which is likely to be Lava's Android One handset. 

As per the listing the Iris X5 4G features 5-inch display, powered by 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735 processor with Mali-T720 GPU and 2GB RAM, 16GB on-board storage, microSD card slot, 13MP/5MP cameras, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and 4G LTE support. 

One of the biggest change in second gen Android One handset is that OEMs like Lava will have complete say in deciding the hardware and software inside the phone. OEMs who are part of this initiative won't be forced to pick up devices from device makers in China and sell them as their own, resulting in greater control over hardware and software.

Lava's Android One handset is expected to be priced around Rs. 12,000.

Google expands Android One to Pakistan with QMobile A1

Google's Android One Program was introduced in June last year with the aim to improve the affordable smartphone experience in emerging markets. The program debuted in India in September followed by other countries namely Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Philippines and Turkey and Mayanmar.

Now Google has expanded it Android One Initiative in another new territory, Pakistan. With the launch it becomes the ninth country to get Android One phones.  Google has partnered with QMobile to the QMobile1 Android One handset. The specifications of the phone is identical to other Android One devices.

QMobile A1 has 4.5-inch FWVGA display, 1.3 GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage, microSD card slot, 5-megapixel rear camera with flash & 2-megapixel front shooter, WiFi, Bluetooth, dual-SIM support and 1700mAh battery. It runs Android 5.1 lollipop out of the box. The company says the device will get updated to latest version of Android upon its release.

The QMobile A1 is priced at 11500 PKR (Rs. 7,000) and is available for purchase via retail stores across the country.

Google to launch Lava made Android One smartphone on July 14

Economic Times reports that Google is planning to introduce second generation of Android One smartphones. The new Android One phone is set to launch on July 14 in New Delhi.

For its latest Android One smartphone Google is partnering with Indian manufacturer Lava International. The phone has been developed in collaboration on hardware and software with Lava and chipmaker MediaTek. It will have improved specifications and an optimized Android OS.

The device will be priced around Rs. 12,000 and will be available through online and offline retail channels. Lava's Android One phone will feature 5-inch display, MediaTek SoC and 2GB RAM. This is an improvement over the first gen Android One phones that featured 4.5-inch display and 1GB RAM. Lava's Android One phones will be controlled by Lava and the company is positioned to provide an enhanced experience.

Google launched three Android One phones last year in India - Micromax Canvas A1, Spice Dream Uno, Karbonn Sparkle V. The Indian manufacturers did not have any involvement in case of design and development. These companies took devices from original device makers (ODMs) in China and had no say over hardware and software.

Lava will position the device as an affordable Nexus smartphone which will get regular software and security updates, the report added.

Google brings Android One program to Myanmar with Cherry Mobile One

Google's Android One initiative was launched in Myanmar. With the launch, Myanmar becomes the eighth country to get Android One Phones after India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Philippines and Turkey. 

Philippines based Cherry Mobile will be Google's OEM partner in Myanmar and will release the Cherry Mobile One to the country.

Cherry Mobile One has 4.5-inch FWVGA (800 x 480 pixels) display, 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage, microSD card slot for storage expansion, Dual-SIM, 5-megapixel camera with LED, 2-megapixel front facing camera and 1700mAh battery. It runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box and will automatically receive an update to the next version of Android upon its release.

The Cherry Mobile One Android One phone is priced at MMK 1,09,900 (Rs. 6,250) and will be available starting June 26 via retail stores across Myanmar. Google also plans to expand the Android One initiative to more countries in the coming months.

Micromax Canvas A1 with 8GB inbuilt storage, Android 5.1 Lollipop now available for Rs. 6,039

Micromax's Android One smartphone, the Canvas A1 which launched with 4GB internal storage in September last year has been upgraded. The Canvas A1 with model number AQ4502 now comes with twice the inbuilt storage of 8GB and runs Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box, other specification are the same.

The Canvas A1 features 4.5-inch (480 x 854 pixels) IPS FWVGA display and is powered by 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek coupled with Mali-400 GPU and 1GB RAM. A microSD card slot is also present for storage expansion that accepts up to 32GB cards.

The phone sports 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and 2-megapixel front facing camera. Connectivity options include WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, GPRS/EDGE and 3G. It is fuelled by 1700mAh battery.

Micromax Canvas A1 AQ4502 is available to buy in Black color via e-commerce website eBay.in for Rs. 6,039. According to Mumbai-based retailer Mahesh Telecom, the MRP of the smartphone is Rs. 7,499. Micromax’s website has been updated with the new device as well.

Google's Android One initiative reaches Turkey with upgraded specs and $260 price tag

Android One Programme from Google was announced in June as a way for Google to provide a high-quality Android experience on entry level handsets.  So far most of the Android One smartphones come with a price tag of $100 and feature entry-level specs like 4.5-inch screen, a quad-core Mediatek SoC, a micro SD slot, and dual-SIM functionality. 

Now Google is bringing the Android One initiative to Turkey with a twist. The twist here is that the Turkish Android One phone will come with better specs and higher price tag as compared to the other markets. With the launch, Turkey becomes the seventh country after India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and the Philippines where Google rolls out Android One phones.

Google is partnering with General Mobile to build the first Turkish Android One Phone. The phone will be called General Mobile 4G and its specs include 5-inch HD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection, 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, 2GB RAM, 13-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front facing camera. The device runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and is guaranteed to receive updates for two years. It supports 4G LTE connectivity.

According to Re/Code the reason for the price being high is "Turkey’s high electronics pricing foiled Google’s plans to keep the smartphones close to $100. The nation is a big market, but a risky one"

Google's Android One Phones Arrive In Philippines

Google launched the Android initiative programme in Philippines. Android One is Google’s global initiative to bring low-cost and respectable smartphone in developing countries like India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sril Lanka and Indonesia.

The search giant revealed that Cherry Mobile and MyPhone as its OEM partners that will bring Android One phones for the Phillipines market.

The new Android handset include Cherry Mobile One and MyPhone Uno. The handsets will be available in the coming weeks. Both the devices runs Android Lollipop 5.1 which is the latest version of Android.

Phillipines Smart and Sun mobile telecom operators will offer upto 100MB per month for six months to provide free OTA updates as well as 200MB per month for app downloads from Google play store.

The Cherry One and MyPhone UNO handsets will share the same specs as the other Android One smartphones.

The handsets will feature 4.5-inch FWVGA display with 480x854 pixels screen resolution. It is powered by 1.3GHz quad-core processor. It packs 1GB RAM and houses 8GB inbuilt storage [microSD card support upto 32GB]. It is equipped with 5-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front facing camera. It is powered by 1700mAh battery and has Dual-SIM support.

Spice Launch Android One Smartphones In Indonesia, Nepal and Bangladesh

Spice Mobility announced the launch of a new Android One Smartphone in Indonesia, Nepal and Bangladesh. In Indonesia the device will be released under the brand name Nexian Journey One. There are no details of the model names for the other two regions - Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

The Nexian Journey One will carry the same specs as the Spice's Dream Uno which was launched in India last year in September. It will be the first smartphone to run Android Lollipop 5.1, which is not yet officially unveiled by Google. According to Spice the latest version of the Android OS will offer improved battery life, enhanced security features and smarter notifications.

Coming to the specs, it features Android 4.5-inch IPS display and is powered by 1.3GHz MediaTek quad-core processor, paired with 1GB RAM and 4GB internal storage [microSD card support]. Camera features include 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and 2-megapixel front facing camera. It is backed by 1700mAh battery. Connectivity options include dual-SIM support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, GPRS/ EDGE and 3G.
